- verse 1अथ तृतीयोऽध्यायः ॥atha tṛtīyō'dhyāyaḥ ॥meaning
Section heading: Now begins the Third Chapter (of the Sri Guru Gita).
- verse 2अथ काम्यजपस्थानं कथयामि वरानने ।सागरान्ते सरित्तीरे तीर्थे हरिहरालये ॥ 236 ॥atha kāmyajapasthānaṃ kathayāmi varānanē ।sāgarāntē sarittīrē tīrthē hariharālayē ॥ 236 ॥meaning
Now I shall describe the places for kamya-japa, O beautiful-faced one: at the ocean-shore, on a river-bank, at a sacred ford, or in a temple of Hari and Hara.
- verse 3शक्तिदेवालये गोष्ठे सर्वदेवालये शुभे ।वटस्य धात्र्या मूले वा मठे बृन्दावने तथा ॥ 237 ॥śaktidēvālayē gōṣṭhē sarvadēvālayē śubhē ।vaṭasya dhātryā mūlē vā maṭhē bṛndāvanē tathā ॥ 237 ॥meaning
Siddhis are attained at a Shakti-temple, a cowshed, any auspicious divine shrine, at the root of a banyan or amalaka tree, in a monastery, or in Vrindavana.
- verse 4पवित्रे निर्मले देशे नित्यानुष्ठानतोऽपि वा ।निर्वेदनेन मौनेन जपमेतत् समारभेत् ॥ 238 ॥pavitrē nirmalē dēśē nityānuṣṭhānatō'pi vā ।nirvēdanēna maunēna japamētat samārabhēt ॥ 238 ॥meaning
In a pure, clean place, or in keeping with one's daily observance, one should begin this japa with detachment and silence.
- verse 5जाप्येन जयमाप्नोति जपसिद्धिं फलं तथा ।हीनं कर्म त्यजेत्सर्वं गर्हितस्थानमेव च ॥ 239 ॥jāpyēna jayamāpnōti japasiddhiṃ phalaṃ tathā ।hīnaṃ karma tyajētsarvaṃ garhitasthānamēva cha ॥ 239 ॥meaning
Through japa one attains victory and the perfection of japa along with its fruit; one must abandon all lowly actions and censurable places.
- verse 6श्मशाने बिल्वमूले वा वटमूलान्तिके तथा ।सिद्ध्यन्ति कानके मूले चूतवृक्षस्य सन्निधौ ॥ 240 ॥śmaśānē bilvamūlē vā vaṭamūlāntikē tathā ।siddhyanti kānakē mūlē chūtavṛkṣasya sannidhau ॥ 240 ॥meaning
Siddhis are attained at a cremation ground, at the root of a bilva tree, near a banyan root, at a golden champaka root, or near a mango tree.
- verse 7पीतासनं मोहने तु ह्यसितं चाभिचारिके ।ज्ञेयं शुक्लं च शान्त्यर्थं वश्ये रक्तं प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ 241 ॥pītāsanaṃ mōhanē tu hyasitaṃ chābhichārikē ।jñēyaṃ śuklaṃ cha śāntyarthaṃ vaśyē raktaṃ prakīrtitam ॥ 241 ॥meaning
A yellow seat is for enchantment, a dark seat for hostile rites, white is for peace-rites, and red is prescribed for subjugation.

Performing japa on a low or improper seat yields inferior results; reciting the Gurugita at the time of departure, battle, or danger from enemies —
- verse 9जपन् जयमवाप्नोति मरणे मुक्तिदायिका ।सर्वकर्माणि सिद्ध्यन्ति गुरुपुत्रे न संशयः ॥ 243 ॥japan jayamavāpnōti maraṇē muktidāyikā ।sarvakarmāṇi siddhyanti guruputrē na saṃśayaḥ ॥ 243 ॥meaning
— one who chants it gains victory, and at the time of death it grants liberation; all actions succeed for the Guru's disciple, without doubt.
- verse 10गुरुमन्त्रो मुखे यस्य तस्य सिद्ध्यन्ति नाऽन्यथा ।दीक्षया सर्वकर्माणि सिद्ध्यन्ति गुरुपुत्रके ॥ 244 ॥gurumantrō mukhē yasya tasya siddhyanti nā'nyathā ।dīkṣayā sarvakarmāṇi siddhyanti guruputrakē ॥ 244 ॥meaning
In whose mouth the Guru's mantra dwells, for him alone do all things succeed — never otherwise; through initiation all actions are perfected in the Guru's disciple.

For the destruction of worldly existence at its root and for freedom from the eight fetters, the knower of truth ever bathes in the waters of the Gurugita.
- verse 12स एवं सद्गुरुः साक्षात् सदसद्ब्रह्मवित्तमः ।तस्य स्थानानि सर्वाणि पवित्राणि न संशयः ॥ 246 ॥sa ēvaṃ sadguruḥ sākṣāt sadasadbrahmavittamaḥ ।tasya sthānāni sarvāṇi pavitrāṇi na saṃśayaḥ ॥ 246 ॥meaning
Such is the sadguru directly — the supreme knower of Brahman as both real and unreal; all places associated with him are undoubtedly sacred.
- verse 13सर्वशुद्धः पवित्रोऽसौ स्वभावाद्यत्र तिष्ठति ।तत्र देवगणाः सर्वे क्षेत्रपीठे चरन्ति च ॥ 247 ॥sarvaśuddhaḥ pavitrō'sau svabhāvādyatra tiṣṭhati ।tatra dēvagaṇāḥ sarvē kṣētrapīṭhē charanti cha ॥ 247 ॥meaning
Entirely pure by his very nature, wherever he abides, all the hosts of gods move about there at that sacred field.
- verse 14आसनस्थाः शयाना वा गच्छन्तस्तिष्ठतोऽपि वा ।अश्वारूढा गजारूढाः सुषुप्ता जाग्रतोऽपि वा ॥ 248 ॥āsanasthāḥ śayānā vā gachChantastiṣṭhatō'pi vā ।aśvārūḍhā gajārūḍhāḥ suṣuptā jāgratō'pi vā ॥ 248 ॥meaning
Whether seated, lying down, walking or standing, riding a horse or elephant, in deep sleep or waking —
- verse 15शुचिर्भूता ज्ञानवन्तो गुरुगीतां जपन्ति ये ।तेषां दर्शनसंस्पर्शात् दिव्यज्ञानं प्रजायते ॥ 249 ॥śuchirbhūtā jñānavantō gurugītāṃ japanti yē ।tēṣāṃ darśanasaṃsparśāt divyajñānaṃ prajāyatē ॥ 249 ॥meaning
— those who are pure and wise and chant the Gurugita in all these states: divine knowledge arises in those who see or touch them.

Just as water merges in the ocean, milk in milk, water in water, and space in space when the pot is broken — so the individual self merges in the Supreme Self.

Likewise the wise individual self rests always in union with the Supreme Self; the jnani revels in oneness wherever he may be, day and night.

Such a great contemplative abides everywhere always; therefore one should practise devotion to the Guru in every possible way.

By the Guru's satisfaction alone one becomes liberated, O Parvati; by his grace alone does enjoyment of the siddhis such as anima arise.

The wise one revels in equanimity day and night; such a great sage of silence attains equality with the three worlds.

All householders who recite the Gurugita enjoy all their desires — this is my triple-true declaration.

Truth, truth, and again truth — this essence of dharma I have declared: there is no hymn equal to the Gurugita, and no reality higher than the Guru.

The Guru is God, the Guru is dharma, steadfastness in the Guru is supreme austerity; there is nothing higher than the Guru — this I declare three times.

Blessed is the mother, blessed the father, blessed the lineage and the family, blessed is the earth, O Goddess, wherever devotion to the Guru exists.

Sacrifices, vows, and austerities performed through crores of births across all aeons — all those are fulfilled by the Guru's satisfaction alone, O Goddess.
- verse 26शरीरमिन्द्रियं प्राणमर्थं स्वजनबन्धुता ।मातृकुलं पितृकुलं गुरुरेव न संशयः ॥ 260 ॥śarīramindriyaṃ prāṇamarthaṃ svajanabandhutā ।mātṛkulaṃ pitṛkulaṃ gururēva na saṃśayaḥ ॥ 260 ॥meaning
Body, senses, life-breath, wealth, kinship, bonds, the mother's line, the father's line — the Guru alone is all these, without doubt.
- verse 27मन्दभाग्या ह्यशक्ताश्च ये जना नानुमन्वते ।गुरुसेवासु विमुखाः पच्यन्ते नरकेऽशुचौ ॥ 261 ॥mandabhāgyā hyaśaktāścha yē janā nānumanvatē ।gurusēvāsu vimukhāḥ pachyantē narakē'śuchau ॥ 261 ॥meaning
Those ill-fated and incapable persons who do not accept this, who turn away from service to the Guru, are scorched in the impure hell.
- verse 28विद्या धनं बलं चैव तेषां भाग्यं निरर्थकम् ।येषां गुरूकृपा नास्ति अधो गच्छन्ति पार्वति ॥ 262 ॥vidyā dhanaṃ balaṃ chaiva tēṣāṃ bhāgyaṃ nirarthakam ।yēṣāṃ gurūkṛpā nāsti adhō gachChanti pārvati ॥ 262 ॥meaning
Learning, wealth, and strength — all the fortune of those in whom the Guru's grace is absent becomes fruitless; they go downward, O Parvati.

Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, the gods, the ancestors, the kinnaras —
- verse 30गुरुभावः परं तीर्थमन्यतीर्थं निरर्थकम् ।सर्वतीर्थमयं देवि श्रीगुरोश्चरणाम्बुजम् ॥ 264 ॥gurubhāvaḥ paraṃ tīrthamanyatīrthaṃ nirarthakam ।sarvatīrthamayaṃ dēvi śrīgurōścharaṇāmbujam ॥ 264 ॥meaning
— siddhas, charanas, yakshas, and other sages: all recognise the Guru-state as the supreme pilgrimage; the lotus-feet of the Guru, O Goddess, contain all pilgrimage-places.
- verse 31कन्याभोगरता मन्दाः स्वकान्तायाः पराङ्मुखाः ।अतः परं मया देवि कथितं न मम प्रिये ॥ 265 ॥kanyābhōgaratā mandāḥ svakāntāyāḥ parāṅmukhāḥ ।ataḥ paraṃ mayā dēvi kathitaṃ na mama priyē ॥ 265 ॥meaning
Those who are addicted to the pleasure of women and turn away from their own consort — beyond this, O Goddess, nothing more has been spoken by me.
- verse 32इदं रहस्यमस्पष्टं वक्तव्यं च वरानने ।सुगोप्यं च तवाग्रे तु ममात्मप्रीतये सति ॥ 266 ॥idaṃ rahasyamaspaṣṭaṃ vaktavyaṃ cha varānanē ।sugōpyaṃ cha tavāgrē tu mamātmaprītayē sati ॥ 266 ॥meaning
This secret is not to be plainly stated, O beautiful-faced one; it is to be kept very secret even before you, since you are devoted to my soul's delight.

This must not be told to followers of Swami, Ganesha, or Vaishnavas, O great Goddess of illusion; do touch my feet.

This Gurugita must never, even in the mind, be communicated to the faithless, the deceitful, the cunning, the heretic, or the atheist.

There are many gurus who plunder the disciple's wealth; I consider rare and singular the one who removes the burning grief from the disciple's heart.

One who is clever and discerning, possessing knowledge of the Self, who is pure and whose mind is spotless — the quality of Guru-hood shines in him.

Gurus who are pure, peaceful, virtuous, sparing of speech, free from desire and anger, of righteous conduct, and who have mastered their senses —
- verse 38सूचकादिप्रभेदेन गुरवो बहुधा स्मृताः ।स्वयं सम्यक् परीक्ष्याथ तत्त्वनिष्ठं भजेत्सुधीः ॥ 272 ॥sūchakādiprabhēdēna guravō bahudhā smṛtāḥ ।svayaṃ samyak parīkṣyātha tattvaniṣṭhaṃ bhajētsudhīḥ ॥ 272 ॥meaning
— gurus are known in many kinds, beginning with the suchaka; the wise one should examine carefully and then worship him who is steadfast in truth.
- verse 39वर्णजालमिदं तद्वद्बाह्यशास्त्रं तु लौकिकम् ।यस्मिन् देवि समभ्यस्तं स गुरुः सुचकः स्मृतः ॥ 273 ॥varṇajālamidaṃ tadvadbāhyaśāstraṃ tu laukikam ।yasmin dēvi samabhyastaṃ sa guruḥ suchakaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥ 273 ॥meaning
The guru who teaches the web of letters and worldly external scripture in which one has practised is called the suchaka guru.
- verse 40वर्णाश्रमोचितां विद्यां धर्माधर्मविधायिनीम् ।प्रवक्तारं गुरुं विद्धि वाचकं त्विति पार्वति ॥ 274 ॥varṇāśramōchitāṃ vidyāṃ dharmādharmavidhāyinīm ।pravaktāraṃ guruṃ viddhi vāchakaṃ tviti pārvati ॥ 274 ॥meaning
Know as the vachaka guru, O Parvati, the one who teaches the learning proper to one's caste and order, setting forth what is dharmic and what is not.
- verse 41पञ्चाक्षर्यादिमन्त्राणामुपदेष्टा तु पार्वति ।स गुरुर्बोधको भूयादुभयोरयमुत्तमः ॥ 275 ॥pañchākṣaryādimantrāṇāmupadēṣṭā tu pārvati ।sa gururbōdhakō bhūyādubhayōrayamuttamaḥ ॥ 275 ॥meaning
The one who initiates into five-syllable and similar mantras, O Parvati, is called the bodhaka guru; he is superior to the two preceding.
- verse 42मोहमारणवश्यादितुच्छमन्त्रोपदेशिनम् ।निषिद्धगुरुरित्याहुः पण्डितास्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ॥ 276 ॥mōhamāraṇavaśyādituchChamantrōpadēśinam ।niṣiddhagururityāhuḥ paṇḍitāstattvadarśinaḥ ॥ 276 ॥meaning
The one who teaches minor mantras for enchantment, killing, and subjugation — sages who see the truth call him the nishiddha (forbidden) guru.
- verse 43अनित्यमिति निर्दिश्य संसारं सङ्कटालयम् ।वैराग्यपथदर्शी यः स गुरुर्विहितः प्रिये ॥ 277 ॥anityamiti nirdiśya saṃsāraṃ saṅkaṭālayam ।vairāgyapathadarśī yaḥ sa gururvihitaḥ priyē ॥ 277 ॥meaning
The one who shows the path of renunciation, pointing out the world as impermanent and a home of afflictions, is called the vihita guru, O beloved.
- verse 44तत्त्वमस्यादिवाक्यानामुपदेष्टा तु पार्वति ।कारणाख्यो गुरुः प्रोक्तो भवरोगनिवारकः ॥ 278 ॥tattvamasyādivākyānāmupadēṣṭā tu pārvati ।kāraṇākhyō guruḥ prōktō bhavarōganivārakaḥ ॥ 278 ॥meaning
The one who initiates into the great Vedantic statements such as 'Tat tvam asi', O Parvati, is called the karana guru, who removes the disease of worldly existence.
- verse 45सर्वसन्देहसन्दोहनिर्मूलनविचक्षणः ।जन्ममृत्युभयघ्नो यः स गुरुः परमो मतः ॥ 279 ॥sarvasandēhasandōhanirmūlanavichakṣaṇaḥ ।janmamṛtyubhayaghnō yaḥ sa guruḥ paramō mataḥ ॥ 279 ॥meaning
Skilled in uprooting every cluster of doubts, destroying the fear of birth and death — he is considered the supreme guru.
- verse 46बहुजन्मकृतात् पुण्याल्लभ्यतेऽसौ महागुरुः ।लब्ध्वाऽमुं न पुनर्याति शिष्यः संसारबन्धनम् ॥ 280 ॥bahujanmakṛtāt puṇyāllabhyatē'sau mahāguruḥ ।labdhvā'muṃ na punaryāti śiṣyaḥ saṃsārabandhanam ॥ 280 ॥meaning
Such a great guru is obtained by merit accumulated over many births; having found him, the disciple is never again bound by worldly existence.
- verse 47एवं बहुविधा लोके गुरवः सन्ति पार्वति ।तेषु सर्वप्रयत्नेन सेव्यो हि परमो गुरुः ॥ 281 ॥ēvaṃ bahuvidhā lōkē guravaḥ santi pārvati ।tēṣu sarvaprayatnēna sēvyō hi paramō guruḥ ॥ 281 ॥meaning
Thus there are many kinds of gurus in the world, O Parvati; among them all, the supreme guru is to be served with every effort.
- verse 48निषिद्धगुरुशिष्यस्तु दुष्टसङ्कल्पदूषितः ।ब्रह्मप्रलयपर्यन्तं न पुनर्याति मर्त्यताम् ॥ 282 ॥niṣiddhaguruśiṣyastu duṣṭasaṅkalpadūṣitaḥ ।brahmapraḻayaparyantaṃ na punaryāti martyatām ॥ 282 ॥meaning
The disciple of a forbidden guru, tainted by evil intentions, does not return to human birth until the dissolution of Brahma's world.
- verse 49एवं श्रुत्वा महादेवी महादेववचस्तथा ।अत्यन्तविह्वलमनाः शङ्करं परिपृच्छति ॥ 283 ॥ēvaṃ śrutvā mahādēvī mahādēvavachastathā ।atyantavihvalamanāḥ śaṅkaraṃ paripṛchChati ॥ 283 ॥meaning
Having heard these words of the great god, the great goddess was extremely agitated in her mind and questioned Shankara.
- verse 50पार्वत्युवाच ।नमस्ते देवदेवात्र श्रोतव्यं किञ्चिदस्ति मे ।श्रुत्वा त्वद्वाक्यमधुना भृशं स्याद्विह्वलं मनः ॥ 284 ॥pārvatyuvācha ।namastē dēvadēvātra śrōtavyaṃ kiñchidasti mē ।śrutvā tvadvākyamadhunā bhṛśaṃ syādvihvalaṃ manaḥ ॥ 284 ॥meaning
Parvati said: Salutations to you, O lord of the gods; there is something I wish to ask; hearing your words, my mind is greatly distressed.
- verse 51स्वयं मूढा मृत्युभीताः सुकृताद्विरतिं गताः ।दैवान्निषिद्धगुरुगा यदि तेषां तु का गतिः ॥ 285 ॥svayaṃ mūḍhā mṛtyubhītāḥ sukṛtādviratiṃ gatāḥ ।daivānniṣiddhagurugā yadi tēṣāṃ tu kā gatiḥ ॥ 285 ॥meaning
Those who are foolish by nature, fearful of death, turned away from meritorious deeds, and who by fate have gone to a forbidden guru — what is their recourse?
- verse 52श्री महादेव उवाच ।शृणु तत्त्वमिदं देवि यदा स्याद्विरतो नरः ।तदाऽसावधिकारीति प्रोच्यते श्रुतिमस्तकैः ॥ 286 ॥śrī mahādēva uvācha ।śṛṇu tattvamidaṃ dēvi yadā syādviratō naraḥ ।tadā'sāvadhikārīti prōchyatē śrutimastakaiḥ ॥ 286 ॥meaning
Sri Mahadeva said: Hear this truth, O Goddess — when a person becomes dispassionate, the Vedanta-summits declare him to be a qualified seeker.
- verse 53अखण्डैकरसं ब्रह्म नित्यमुक्तं निरामयम् ।स्वस्मिन् सन्दर्शितं येन स भवेदस्यं देशिकः ॥ 287 ॥akhaṇḍaikarasaṃ brahma nityamuktaṃ nirāmayam ।svasmin sandarśitaṃ yēna sa bhavēdasyaṃ dēśikaḥ ॥ 287 ॥meaning
The one by whom the undivided, ever-free, flawless Brahman of single essence has been directly revealed to oneself — he would be that person's teacher.
- verse 54जलानां सागरो राजा यथा भवति पार्वति ।गुरूणां तत्र सर्वेषां राजाऽयं परमो गुरुः ॥ 288 ॥jalānāṃ sāgarō rājā yathā bhavati pārvati ।gurūṇāṃ tatra sarvēṣāṃ rājā'yaṃ paramō guruḥ ॥ 288 ॥meaning
Just as the ocean is the king among waters, O Parvati, so among all gurus this supreme guru is king.
- verse 55मोहादिरहितः शान्तो नित्यतृप्तो निराश्रयः ।तृणीकृतब्रह्मविष्णुवैभवः परमो गुरुः ॥ 289 ॥mōhādirahitaḥ śāntō nityatṛptō nirāśrayaḥ ।tṛṇīkṛtabrahmaviṣṇuvaibhavaḥ paramō guruḥ ॥ 289 ॥meaning
Free from delusion, peaceful, ever-satisfied, without support, for whom the glories of Brahma and Vishnu are as straw — he is the supreme guru.
- verse 56सर्वकालविदेशेषु स्वतन्त्रो निश्चलस्सुखी ।अखण्डैकरसास्वादतृप्तो हि परमो गुरुः ॥ 290 ॥sarvakālavidēśēṣu svatantrō niśchalassukhī ।akhaṇḍaikarasāsvādatṛptō hi paramō guruḥ ॥ 290 ॥meaning
Independent at all times and places, motionless, happy, satisfied in the relish of the undivided single essence — he is indeed the supreme guru.
- verse 57द्वैताद्वैतविनिर्मुक्तः स्वानुभूतिप्रकाशवान् ।अज्ञानान्धतमश्छेत्ता सर्वज्ञः परमो गुरुः ॥ 291 ॥dvaitādvaitavinirmuktaḥ svānubhūtiprakāśavān ।ajñānāndhatamaśChēttā sarvajñaḥ paramō guruḥ ॥ 291 ॥meaning
Free from duality and non-duality, shining with the light of his own experience, the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance, all-knowing — he is the supreme guru.
- verse 58यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण मनसः स्यात् प्रसन्नता ।स्वयं भूयात् धृतिश्शान्तिः स भवेत् परमो गुरुः ॥ 292 ॥yasya darśanamātrēṇa manasaḥ syāt prasannatā ।svayaṃ bhūyāt dhṛtiśśāntiḥ sa bhavēt paramō guruḥ ॥ 292 ॥meaning
Merely by whose sight the mind becomes serene, and peace and composure arise of themselves — he is the supreme guru.
- verse 59सिद्धिजालं समालोक्य योगिनां मन्त्रवादिनाम् ।तुच्छाकारमनोवृत्तिः यस्यासौ परमो गुरुः ॥ 293 ॥siddhijālaṃ samālōkya yōgināṃ mantravādinām ।tuchChākāramanōvṛttiḥ yasyāsau paramō guruḥ ॥ 293 ॥meaning
One whose mental mode regards as trivial the whole array of siddhis of yogis and mantra-masters — he is the supreme guru.
- verse 60स्वशरीरं शवं पश्यन् तथा स्वात्मानमद्वयम् ।यः स्त्रीकनकमोहघ्नः स भवेत् परमो गुरुः ॥ 294 ॥svaśarīraṃ śavaṃ paśyan tathā svātmānamadvayam ।yaḥ strīkanakamōhaghnaḥ sa bhavēt paramō guruḥ ॥ 294 ॥meaning
One who sees his own body as a corpse and his own Self as non-dual, who destroys infatuation with women and gold — he is the supreme guru.
- verse 61मौनी वाग्मीति तत्त्वज्ञो द्विधाऽभूच्छृणु पार्वति ।न कश्चिन्मौनिनां लोभो लोकेऽस्मिन्भवति प्रिये ॥ 295 ॥maunī vāgmīti tattvajñō dvidhā'bhūchChṛṇu pārvati ।na kaśchinmaunināṃ lōbhō lōkē'sminbhavati priyē ॥ 295 ॥meaning
The knower of truth, O Parvati, is of two kinds: the silent one and the eloquent one; the silent one has no greed in this world, O beloved.
- verse 62वाग्मी तूत्कटसंसारसागरोत्तारणक्षमः ।यतोऽसौ संशयच्छेत्ता शास्त्रयुक्त्यनुभूतिभिः ॥ 296 ॥vāgmī tūtkaṭasaṃsārasāgarōttāraṇakṣamaḥ ।yatō'sau saṃśayachChēttā śāstrayuktyanubhūtibhiḥ ॥ 296 ॥meaning
The eloquent one alone is capable of ferrying across the mighty ocean of worldly existence, for he cuts doubts through scripture, reasoning, and direct experience.
- verse 63गुरुनामजपाद्देवि बहुजन्मार्जितान्यपि ।पापानि विलयं यान्ति नास्ति सन्देहमण्वपि ॥ 297 ॥gurunāmajapāddēvi bahujanmārjitānyapi ।pāpāni vilayaṃ yānti nāsti sandēhamaṇvapi ॥ 297 ॥meaning
By repetition of the Guru's name, O Goddess, sins accumulated over many births dissolve — there is not the slightest doubt of this.
- verse 64श्रीगुरोस्सदृशं दैवं श्रीगुरोसदृशः पिता ।गुरुध्यानसमं कर्म नास्ति नास्ति महीतले ॥ 298 ॥śrīgurōssadṛśaṃ daivaṃ śrīgurōsadṛśaḥ pitā ।gurudhyānasamaṃ karma nāsti nāsti mahītalē ॥ 298 ॥meaning
There is no deity equal to the blessed Guru, no father equal to the blessed Guru; there is no action in this world equal to meditation on the Guru.
- verse 65कुलं धनं बलं शास्त्रं बान्धवास्सोदरा इमे ।मरणे नोपयुज्यन्ते गुरुरेको हि तारकः ॥ 299 ॥kulaṃ dhanaṃ balaṃ śāstraṃ bāndhavāssōdarā imē ।maraṇē nōpayujyantē gururēkō hi tārakaḥ ॥ 299 ॥meaning
Lineage, wealth, strength, scripture, and all kinsmen and brothers — none serve at the time of death; the Guru alone is the deliverer.
- verse 66कुलमेव पवित्रं स्यात् सत्यं स्वगुरुसेवया ।तृप्ताः स्युस्सकला देवा ब्रह्माद्या गुरुतर्पणात् ॥ 300 ॥kulamēva pavitraṃ syāt satyaṃ svagurusēvayā ।tṛptāḥ syussakalā dēvā brahmādyā gurutarpaṇāt ॥ 300 ॥meaning
The lineage itself becomes truly purified through service to one's Guru; all the gods headed by Brahma are satisfied through offering to the Guru.
- verse 67गुरुरेको हि जानाति स्वरूपं देवमव्ययम् ।तद्ज्ञानं यत्प्रसादेन नान्यथा शास्त्रकोटिभिः ॥ 301 ॥gururēkō hi jānāti svarūpaṃ dēvamavyayam ।tadjñānaṃ yatprasādēna nānyathā śāstrakōṭibhiḥ ॥ 301 ॥meaning
The Guru alone knows the form of the imperishable divine Self; that knowledge arises only by his grace, never through crores of scriptures.
- verse 68स्वरूपज्ञानशून्येन कृतमप्यकृतं भवेत् ।तपोजपादिकं देवि सकलं बालजल्पवत् ॥ 302 ॥svarūpajñānaśūnyēna kṛtamapyakṛtaṃ bhavēt ।tapōjapādikaṃ dēvi sakalaṃ bālajalpavat ॥ 302 ॥meaning
Whatever is done by one devoid of the knowledge of the Self becomes as if undone; all his austerity, japa, and so forth is like the babbling of a child.
- verse 69शिवं केचिद्धरिं केचिद्विधिं केचित्तु केचन ।शक्तिं दैवमिति ज्ञात्वा विवदन्ति वृथा नराः ॥ 303 ॥śivaṃ kēchiddhariṃ kēchidvidhiṃ kēchittu kēchana ।śaktiṃ daivamiti jñātvā vivadanti vṛthā narāḥ ॥ 303 ॥meaning
Some call that divinity Shiva, some Hari, some Brahma, some Shakti — men vainly quarrel, knowing it only as 'deity'.
- verse 70न जानन्ति परं तत्त्वं गुरुदीक्षापराङ्मुखाः ।भ्रान्ताः पशुसमा ह्येते स्वपरिज्ञानवर्जिताः ॥ 304 ॥na jānanti paraṃ tattvaṃ gurudīkṣāparāṅmukhāḥ ।bhrāntāḥ paśusamā hyētē svaparijñānavarjitāḥ ॥ 304 ॥meaning
Those averse to the Guru's initiation do not know the supreme truth; deluded, like animals, they lack knowledge of self and other.
- verse 71तस्मात्कैवल्यसिद्ध्यर्थं गुरुमेव भजेत्प्रिये ।गुरुं विना न जानन्ति मूढास्तत्परमं पदम् ॥ 305 ॥tasmātkaivalyasiddhyarthaṃ gurumēva bhajētpriyē ।guruṃ vinā na jānanti mūḍhāstatparamaṃ padam ॥ 305 ॥meaning
Therefore, for the attainment of liberation, one should worship the Guru alone, O beloved; without the Guru the foolish do not know that supreme abode.
- verse 72भिद्यते हृदयग्रन्थिश्छिद्यन्ते सर्वसंशयाः ।क्षीयन्ते सर्वकर्माणि गुरोः करुणया शिवे ॥ 306 ॥bhidyatē hṛdayagranthiśChidyantē sarvasaṃśayāḥ ।kṣīyantē sarvakarmāṇi gurōḥ karuṇayā śivē ॥ 306 ॥meaning
The knot of the heart is severed, all doubts are cut asunder, all karmas are dissolved by the Guru's compassion, O auspicious one.
- verse 73कृताया गुरुभक्तेस्तु वेदशास्त्रानुसारतः ।मुच्यते पातकाद्घोरात् गुरुभक्तो विशेषतः ॥ 307 ॥kṛtāyā gurubhaktēstu vēdaśāstrānusārataḥ ।muchyatē pātakādghōrāt gurubhaktō viśēṣataḥ ॥ 307 ॥meaning
By devotion to the Guru practised in accordance with the Veda and scripture, the Guru's devotee is especially freed from terrible sin.
- verse 74दुस्सङ्गं च परित्यज्य पापकर्म परित्यजेत् ।चित्तचिह्नमिदं यस्य तस्य दीक्षा विधीयते ॥ 308 ॥dussaṅgaṃ cha parityajya pāpakarma parityajēt ।chittachihnamidaṃ yasya tasya dīkṣā vidhīyatē ॥ 308 ॥meaning
One who abandons bad company and sinful action, who bears such marks in the mind — for such a one initiation is prescribed.
- verse 75चित्तत्यागनियुक्तश्च क्रोधगर्वविवर्जितः ।द्वैतभावपरित्यागी तस्य दीक्षा विधीयते ॥ 309 ॥chittatyāganiyuktaścha krōdhagarvavivarjitaḥ ।dvaitabhāvaparityāgī tasya dīkṣā vidhīyatē ॥ 309 ॥meaning
One engaged in renouncing mental constructs, free from anger and pride, who has abandoned the sense of duality — for such a one initiation is prescribed.
- verse 76एतल्लक्षणयुक्तत्वं सर्वभूतहिते रतम् ।निर्मलं जीवितं यस्य तस्य दीक्षा विधीयते ॥ 310 ॥ētallakṣaṇayuktatvaṃ sarvabhūtahitē ratam ।nirmalaṃ jīvitaṃ yasya tasya dīkṣā vidhīyatē ॥ 310 ॥meaning
One whose life is pure, endowed with the quality of working for the welfare of all beings, free from blemish — for such a one initiation is prescribed.
- verse 77क्रियया चान्वितं पूर्वं दीक्षाजालं निरूपितम् ।मन्त्रदीक्षाभिधं साङ्गोपाङ्गं सर्वं शिवोदितम् ॥ 311 ॥kriyayā chānvitaṃ pūrvaṃ dīkṣājālaṃ nirūpitam ।mantradīkṣābhidhaṃ sāṅgōpāṅgaṃ sarvaṃ śivōditam ॥ 311 ॥meaning
What was formerly described as the network of initiation connected with action is called mantra-diksha; its whole body with auxiliaries has been declared by Shiva.
- verse 78क्रियया स्याद्विरहितां गुरुसायुज्यदायिनीम् ।गुरुदीक्षां विना को वा गुरुत्वाचारपालकः ॥ 312 ॥kriyayā syādvirahitāṃ gurusāyujyadāyinīm ।gurudīkṣāṃ vinā kō vā gurutvāchārapālakaḥ ॥ 312 ॥meaning
Guru-diksha, which grants union with the Guru and is free of ritual activity — without the Guru's initiation, who can uphold the Guru's discipline?
- verse 79शक्तो न चापि शक्तो वा दैशिकाङ्घ्रि समाश्रयेत् ।तस्य जन्मास्ति सफलं भोगमोक्षफलप्रदम् ॥ 313 ॥śaktō na chāpi śaktō vā daiśikāṅghri samāśrayēt ।tasya janmāsti saphalaṃ bhōgamōkṣaphalapradam ॥ 313 ॥meaning
Whether capable or incapable, one should take refuge at the feet of the teacher; that birth becomes fruitful, yielding the fruit of both enjoyment and liberation.
- verse 80अत्यन्तचित्तपक्वस्य श्रद्धाभक्तियुतस्य च ।प्रवक्तव्यमिदं देवि ममात्मप्रीतये सदा ॥ 314 ॥atyantachittapakvasya śraddhābhaktiyutasya cha ।pravaktavyamidaṃ dēvi mamātmaprītayē sadā ॥ 314 ॥meaning
This, O Goddess, is to be imparted to one whose mind is very ripe and who is endowed with faith and devotion, always for my soul's delight.
- verse 81रहस्यं सर्वशास्त्रेषु गीताशास्त्रमिदं शिवे ।सम्यक्परीक्ष्य वक्तव्यं साधकस्य महात्मनः ॥ 315 ॥rahasyaṃ sarvaśāstrēṣu gītāśāstramidaṃ śivē ।samyakparīkṣya vaktavyaṃ sādhakasya mahātmanaḥ ॥ 315 ॥meaning
This scripture of the Gita is a secret among all scriptures, O auspicious one; after careful examination it should be imparted to a great-souled seeker.
- verse 82सत्कर्मपरिपाकाच्च चित्तशुद्धिश्च धीमतः ।साधकस्यैव वक्तव्या गुरुगीता प्रयत्नतः ॥ 316 ॥satkarmaparipākāchcha chittaśuddhiścha dhīmataḥ ।sādhakasyaiva vaktavyā gurugītā prayatnataḥ ॥ 316 ॥meaning
Through the ripening of good actions the wise seeker's mind becomes purified; the Gurugita should be imparted to the seeker with effort.
- verse 83नास्तिकाय कृतघ्नाय दाम्भिकाय शठाय च ।अभक्ताय विभक्ताय न वाच्येयं कदाचन ॥ 317 ॥nāstikāya kṛtaghnāya dāmbhikāya śaṭhāya cha ।abhaktāya vibhaktāya na vāchyēyaṃ kadāchana ॥ 317 ॥meaning
This must never be told to the atheist, the ungrateful, the hypocrite, the rogue, the unfaithful, or the divisive.
- verse 84स्त्रीलोलुपाय मूर्खाय कामोपहतचेतसे ।निन्दकाय न वक्तव्या गुरुगीता स्वभावतः ॥ 318 ॥strīlōlupāya mūrkhāya kāmōpahatachētasē ।nindakāya na vaktavyā gurugītā svabhāvataḥ ॥ 318 ॥meaning
It should not by its very nature be imparted to one addicted to women, a fool, one whose mind is overcome by desire, or a slanderer.
- verse 85सर्वपापप्रशमनं सर्वोपद्रववारकम् ।जन्ममृत्युहरं देवि गीताशास्त्रमिदं शिवे ॥ 319 ॥sarvapāpapraśamanaṃ sarvōpadravavārakam ।janmamṛtyuharaṃ dēvi gītāśāstramidaṃ śivē ॥ 319 ॥meaning
This scripture of the Gita pacifies all sins, averts all afflictions, and removes fear of birth and death, O auspicious Goddess.
- verse 86श्रुतिसारमिदं देवि सर्वमुक्तं समासतः ।नान्यथा सद्गतिः पुंसां विना गुरुपदं शिवे ॥ 320 ॥śrutisāramidaṃ dēvi sarvamuktaṃ samāsataḥ ।nānyathā sadgatiḥ puṃsāṃ vinā gurupadaṃ śivē ॥ 320 ॥meaning
This is the essence of the Vedas — all has been said in brief, O Goddess; without the Guru's feet there is no good journey for any person.
- verse 87बहुजन्मकृतात्पापादयमर्थो न रोचते ।जन्मबन्धनिवृत्त्यर्थं गुरुमेव भजेत्सदा ॥ 321 ॥bahujanmakṛtātpāpādayamarthō na rōchatē ।janmabandhanivṛttyarthaṃ gurumēva bhajētsadā ॥ 321 ॥meaning
Due to sins accumulated over many births this teaching does not please; one should always worship the Guru alone for freedom from the bonds of rebirth.
- verse 88अहमेव जगत्सर्वमहमेव परं पदम् ।एतद्ज्ञानं यतो भूयात्तं गुरुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 322 ॥ahamēva jagatsarvamahamēva paraṃ padam ।ētadjñānaṃ yatō bhūyāttaṃ guruṃ praṇamāmyaham ॥ 322 ॥meaning
I alone am the entire universe, I alone am the supreme abode; I bow to that Guru by whose grace this knowledge arises.
- verse 89अलं विकल्पैरहमेव केवलंमयि स्थितं विश्वमिदं चराचरम् ।इदं रहस्यं मम येन दर्शितंस वन्दनीयो गुरुरेव केवलम् ॥ 323 ॥alaṃ vikalpairahamēva kēvalaṃmayi sthitaṃ viśvamidaṃ charācharam ।idaṃ rahasyaṃ mama yēna darśitaṃsa vandanīyō gururēva kēvalam ॥ 323 ॥meaning
Enough with doubts — I alone am; in me rests this entire moving and unmoving universe; the one by whom this mystery has been shown to me — that Guru alone is to be revered.
- verse 90यस्यान्तं नादिमध्यं न हि करचरणं नामगोत्रं न सूत्रम् ।नो जातिर्नैव वर्णो न भवति पुरुषो नो नपुंसो न च स्त्री ॥ 324 ॥yasyāntaṃ nādimadhyaṃ na hi karacharaṇaṃ nāmagōtraṃ na sūtram ।nō jātirnaiva varṇō na bhavati puruṣō nō napuṃsō na cha strī ॥ 324 ॥meaning
He who has neither end, origin, nor middle, neither hand nor foot, neither name nor lineage nor thread, no birth, no caste, no colour, neither male, neuter, nor female —
- verse 91नाकारं नो विकारं न हि जनिमरणं नास्ति पुण्यं न पापम् ।नोऽतत्त्वं तत्त्वमेकं सहजसमरसं सद्गुरुं तं नमामि ॥ 325 ॥nākāraṃ nō vikāraṃ na hi janimaraṇaṃ nāsti puṇyaṃ na pāpam ।nō'tattvaṃ tattvamēkaṃ sahajasamarasaṃ sadguruṃ taṃ namāmi ॥ 325 ॥meaning
— has neither form nor deformity, no birth or death, neither merit nor sin, nothing untrue, one single truth, naturally of one essence — to that sadguru I bow. [Phalashruti]
- verse 92नित्याय सत्याय चिदात्मकायनव्याय भव्याय परात्पराय ।शुद्धाय बुद्धाय निरञ्जनायनमोऽस्तु नित्यं गुरुशेखराय ॥ 326 ॥nityāya satyāya chidātmakāyanavyāya bhavyāya parātparāya ।śuddhāya buddhāya nirañjanāyanamō'stu nityaṃ guruśēkharāya ॥ 326 ॥meaning
Salutation always to Guru-shekhara who is eternal, true, of the nature of consciousness, ever-fresh, auspicious, supreme beyond the supreme, pure, awakened, stainless.
- verse 93सच्चिदानन्दरूपाय व्यापिने परमात्मने ।नमः श्रीगुरुनाथाय प्रकाशानन्दमूर्तये ॥ 327 ॥sachchidānandarūpāya vyāpinē paramātmanē ।namaḥ śrīgurunāthāya prakāśānandamūrtayē ॥ 327 ॥meaning
Salutation to the blessed Guru-natha of the nature of existence-consciousness-bliss, who pervades all as the Supreme Self, who is the embodiment of luminous bliss.
- verse 94सत्यानन्दस्वरूपाय बोधैकसुखकारिणे ।नमो वेदान्तवेद्याय गुरवे बुद्धिसाक्षिणे ॥ 328 ॥satyānandasvarūpāya bōdhaikasukhakāriṇē ।namō vēdāntavēdyāya guravē buddhisākṣiṇē ॥ 328 ॥meaning
Salutation to the Guru of the nature of truth and bliss, who bestows the single happiness of knowledge, who is known through Vedanta, and who is the witness of the intellect.
- verse 95नमस्ते नाथ भगवन् शिवाय गुरुरूपिणे ।विद्यावतारसंसिद्ध्यै स्वीकृतानेकविग्रह ॥ 329 ॥namastē nātha bhagavan śivāya gururūpiṇē ।vidyāvatārasaṃsiddhyai svīkṛtānēkavigraha ॥ 329 ॥meaning
Salutation to you, O Lord, O Blessed One, O Shiva in the form of the Guru, who have assumed many forms for the accomplishment of the descent of knowledge.
- verse 96नवाय नवरूपाय परमार्थैकरूपिणे ।सर्वाज्ञानतमोभेदभानवे चिद्घनाय ते ॥ 330 ॥navāya navarūpāya paramārthaikarūpiṇē ।sarvājñānatamōbhēdabhānavē chidghanāya tē ॥ 330 ॥meaning
To you who are ever-fresh, of ever-fresh form, of the nature of single supreme reality, who are the sun dispelling all darkness of ignorance, of the nature of solid consciousness.

To you who are self-sovereign, whose form is shaped by compassion, of the nature of Shiva, who are dependent upon your devotees, of auspicious form for the auspicious.

This Gurugita, O Goddess, which destroys the sorrows of worldly existence, must never be recited in the presence of one uninitiated by a guru.

This is a secret, an utmost secret, not obtainable by the sinner, O Maheshvari; a person attains the truth of the Guru only through the ripening of merit from many births.
