- verse 2ध्यानम्हंसाभ्यां परिवृत्तपत्रकमलैर्दिव्यैर्जगत्कारणंविश्वोत्कीर्णमनेकदेहनिलयं स्वच्छन्दमानन्दकम् ।आद्यन्तैकमखण्डचिद्घनरसं पूर्णं ह्यनन्तं शुभंप्रत्यक्षाक्षरविग्रहं गुरुपदं ध्यायेद्विभुं शाश्वतम् ॥dhyānamhaṃsābhyāṃ parivṛttapatrakamalairdivyairjagatkāraṇaṃviśvōtkīrṇamanēkadēhanilayaṃ svachChandamānandakam ।ādyantaikamakhaṇḍachidghanarasaṃ pūrṇaṃ hyanantaṃ śubhaṃpratyakṣākṣaravigrahaṃ gurupadaṃ dhyāyēdvibhuṃ śāśvatam ॥meaning
Meditate upon the eternal omnipresent Guru-principle as the primordial cause surrounded by divine lotus-petals held by swans, the abode of countless bodies, spontaneous bliss, the undivided dense essence of consciousness from beginning to end, infinitely full and auspicious, directly manifest as the syllabic form.

- verse 4अचिन्त्याव्यक्तरूपाय निर्गुणाय गणात्मने ।समस्तजगदाधारमूर्तये ब्रह्मणे नमः ॥ 1 ॥achintyāvyaktarūpāya nirguṇāya gaṇātmanē ।samastajagadādhāramūrtayē brahmaṇē namaḥ ॥ 1 ॥meaning
Salutation to Brahman, whose form is inconceivable and unmanifest, who is without qualities, the soul of the multitude, and the embodiment that supports all the world.
- verse 5ऋषय ऊचुः ।सूत सूत महाप्राज्ञ निगमागमपारग ।गुरुस्वरूपमस्माकं ब्रूहि सर्वमलापहम् ॥ 2 ॥ṛṣaya ūchuḥ ।sūta sūta mahāprājña nigamāgamapāraga ।gurusvarūpamasmākaṃ brūhi sarvamalāpaham ॥ 2 ॥meaning
The sages spoke: O Suta, O Suta, greatly wise one versed in Vedas and Agamas, reveal to us the form of the Guru, the destroyer of all impurity.
- verse 6यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण देही दुःखाद्विमुच्यते ।येन मार्गेण मुनयः सर्वज्ञत्वं प्रपेदिरे ॥ 3 ॥yasya śravaṇamātrēṇa dēhī duḥkhādvimuchyatē ।yēna mārgēṇa munayaḥ sarvajñatvaṃ prapēdirē ॥ 3 ॥meaning
By hearing alone of which the embodied soul is liberated from suffering, and by whose path the sages have attained omniscience.
- verse 7यत्प्राप्य न पुनर्याति नरः संसारबन्धनम् ।तथाविधं परं तत्त्वं वक्तव्यमधुना त्वया ॥ 4 ॥yatprāpya na punaryāti naraḥ saṃsārabandhanam ।tathāvidhaṃ paraṃ tattvaṃ vaktavyamadhunā tvayā ॥ 4 ॥meaning
That supreme truth by attaining which a man does not return again to the bondage of worldly existence—such a truth you must now expound.
- verse 8गुह्याद्गुह्यतमं सारं गुरुगीता विशेषतः ।त्वत्प्रसादाच्च श्रोतव्या तत्सर्वं ब्रूहि सूत नः ॥ 5 ॥guhyādguhyatamaṃ sāraṃ gurugītā viśēṣataḥ ।tvatprasādāchcha śrōtavyā tatsarvaṃ brūhi sūta naḥ ॥ 5 ॥meaning
The Gurugita is the most secret essence among all secrets, and by your grace it should be heard—tell us all this, O Suta.

Thus the Suta, repeatedly beseeched by the assembly of sages, (began to speak).

With great eagerness, he spoke sweet words.
- verse 11सूत उवाच ।श्रुणुध्वं मुनयः सर्वे श्रद्धया परया मुदा ।वदामि भवरोगघ्नीं गीतां मातृस्वरूपिणीम् ॥ 7 ॥sūta uvācha ।śruṇudhvaṃ munayaḥ sarvē śraddhayā parayā mudā ।vadāmi bhavarōgaghnīṃ gītāṃ mātṛsvarūpiṇīm ॥ 7 ॥meaning
Suta speaks: Hear, all sages, with supreme faith and joy—I proclaim this song that destroys the disease of existence, embodying the form of the Mother.

Upon Mount Kailash's peak of old, attended by perfected beings and celestial musicians, there in a mansion wreathed with wish-fulfilling vines and blossoms, supremely beautiful.

Seated upon a tiger-skin, revered by Shuka and other sages, teaching the supreme truth amidst the assembly of sages here and there.
- verse 14प्रणम्रवदना शश्वन्नमस्कुर्वन्तमादरात् ।दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमापन्न पार्वती परिपृच्छति ॥ 10 ॥praṇamravadanā śaśvannamaskurvantamādarāt ।dṛṣṭvā vismayamāpanna pārvatī paripṛchChati ॥ 10 ॥meaning
Parvati, having witnessed Shiva constantly bowing with a reverential face and prostrating with devotion, struck with wonder, inquires further.
- verse 15पार्वत्युवाच ।ॐ नमो देव देवेश परात्पर जगद्गुरो ।त्वां नमस्कुर्वते भक्त्या सुरासुरनराः सदा ॥ 11 ॥pārvatyuvācha ।ōṃ namō dēva dēvēśa parātpara jagadgurō ।tvāṃ namaskurvatē bhaktyā surāsuranarāḥ sadā ॥ 11 ॥meaning
Parvati spoke: Om, salutation to the Divine, Lord of gods, Transcendent Supreme, Guru of the world—the celestials, demons, and humans perpetually bow to you with devotion.
- verse 16विधिविष्णुमहेन्द्राद्यैर्वन्द्यः खलु सदा भवान् ।नमस्करोषि कस्मै त्वं नमस्काराश्रयः किल ॥ 12 ॥vidhiviṣṇumahēndrādyairvandyaḥ khalu sadā bhavān ।namaskarōṣi kasmai tvaṃ namaskārāśrayaḥ kila ॥ 12 ॥meaning
You are ever worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and others, yet to whom do you bow in salutation, for you are the very refuge of all prostration itself.
- verse 17दृष्ट्वैतत्कर्म विपुलमाश्चर्य प्रतिभाति मे ।किमेतन्न विजानेऽहं कृपया वद मे प्रभो ॥ 13 ॥dṛṣṭvaitatkarma vipulamāścharya pratibhāti mē ।kimētanna vijānē'haṃ kṛpayā vada mē prabhō ॥ 13 ॥meaning
Having beheld this vast work, wonder strikes me—what is this that I do not understand; pray tell me, O Lord.
- verse 18भगवन् सर्वधर्मज्ञ व्रतानां व्रतनायकम् ।ब्रूहि मे कृपया शम्भो गुरुमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥ 14 ॥bhagavan sarvadharmajña vratānāṃ vratanāyakam ।brūhi mē kṛpayā śambhō gurumāhātmyamuttamam ॥ 14 ॥meaning
O Lord, knower of all dharmas, leader of all vows—tell me, Shambho, out of compassion the supreme glory of the Guru.
- verse 19केन मार्गेण भो स्वामिन् देही ब्रह्ममयो भवेत् ।तत्कृपां कुरु मे स्वामिन् नमामि चरणौ तव ॥ 15 ॥kēna mārgēṇa bhō svāmin dēhī brahmamayō bhavēt ।tatkṛpāṃ kuru mē svāmin namāmi charaṇau tava ॥ 15 ॥meaning
By what path, O Master, may the embodied one become filled with Brahman; bestow that grace upon me, O Master—I bow to your feet.
- verse 20इति सम्प्रार्थितः शश्वन्महादेवो महेश्वरः ।आनन्दभरितः स्वान्ते पार्वतीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥ 16 ॥iti samprārthitaḥ śaśvanmahādēvō mahēśvaraḥ ।ānandabharitaḥ svāntē pārvatīmidamabravīt ॥ 16 ॥meaning
Thus ever beseeched, the great lord Maheshvara, filled with bliss in his own heart, spoke this to Parvati.
- verse 21श्री महादेव उवाच ।न वक्तव्यमिदं देवि रहस्यातिरहस्यकम् ।न कस्यापि पुरा प्रोक्तं त्वद्भक्त्यर्थं वदामि तत् ॥ 17 ॥śrī mahādēva uvācha ।na vaktavyamidaṃ dēvi rahasyātirahasyakam ।na kasyāpi purā prōktaṃ tvadbhaktyarthaṃ vadāmi tat ॥ 17 ॥meaning
This teaching, O Goddess, is supremely secret and should not be revealed; never before spoken to anyone, I tell it to you for the sake of your devotion.

You are my form, O Devi, therefore I tell you this; this question beneficial to the world has never before been asked by anyone.
- verse 23यस्य देवे परा भक्तिर्यथा देवे तथा गुरौ ।तस्यैते कथिता ह्यर्थाः प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः ॥ 19 ॥yasya dēvē parā bhaktiryathā dēvē tathā gurau ।tasyaitē kathitā hyarthāḥ prakāśantē mahātmanaḥ ॥ 19 ॥meaning
For one whose supreme devotion to the divine is equal to devotion to the guru, these meanings taught here shine forth clearly in that great soul.
- verse 24यो गुरुः स शिवः प्रोक्तो यः शिवः स गुरुः स्मृतः ।विकल्पं यस्तु कुर्वीत स नरो गुरुतल्पगः ॥ 20 ॥yō guruḥ sa śivaḥ prōktō yaḥ śivaḥ sa guruḥ smṛtaḥ ।vikalpaṃ yastu kurvīta sa narō gurutalpagaḥ ॥ 20 ॥meaning
Whoever is declared as the Guru is Shiva, and whoever is Shiva is remembered as the Guru; that man who makes a distinction between them becomes one who lies upon the Guru's bed (commits grave transgression).
- verse 25दुर्लभं त्रिषु लोकेषु तच्छृणुष्व वदाम्यहम् ।गुरुब्रह्म विना नान्यः सत्यं सत्यं वरानने ॥ 21 ॥durlabhaṃ triṣu lōkēṣu tachChṛṇuṣva vadāmyaham ।gurubrahma vinā nānyaḥ satyaṃ satyaṃ varānanē ॥ 21 ॥meaning
That which is rare in all three worlds, hear this—I speak it: there is none other than the Guru-Brahman; true, true, O fair-faced one.

The Vedas, scriptures, and Puranas together with histories and such; the sciences of mantras, yantras, and their applications like enchantment and expulsion—all these.

The Shaiva, Shakta, and Agama teachings, and many other doctrines, are but corruptions of the truth for all beings whose minds are deluded.

Chanting, austerity, vows, pilgrimage, sacrifice, and giving—all become fruitless, beloved, without knowledge of the Guru-principle.

There is truly, truly nothing other than the Guru in intellect and Self, O fair-faced one; therefore, effort for attaining that is what the wise must undertake.

Hidden knowledge is the world's illusion, the body arises from ignorance, yet wisdom—bestowed by grace—is what the word "Guru" declares.
- verse 31यदङ्घ्रिकमलद्वन्द्वं द्वन्द्वतापनिवारकम् ।तारकं भवसिन्धोश्च तं गुरुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥ 27 ॥yadaṅghrikamaladvandvaṃ dvandvatāpanivārakam ।tārakaṃ bhavasindhōścha taṃ guruṃ praṇamāmyaham ॥ 27 ॥meaning
I bow to that Guru whose lotus feet, a pair, dispel the torment of duality and serve as the ferry across the ocean of existence.

The embodied soul becomes Brahman through this, which I speak for thy grace: the soul purified of all sins through service to the feet of the revered Guru.
- verse 33सर्वतीर्थावगाहस्य सम्प्राप्नोति फलं नरः ।गुरोः पादोदकं पीत्वा शेषं शिरसि धारयन् ॥ 29 ॥sarvatīrthāvagāhasya samprāpnōti phalaṃ naraḥ ।gurōḥ pādōdakaṃ pītvā śēṣaṃ śirasi dhārayan ॥ 29 ॥meaning
A man attains the fruit of bathing in all sacred waters by drinking the guru's foot-water and bearing its remainder upon his head.

The foot-water of the Guru is the desiccation of the mire of sin, the kindling of the radiance of knowledge, and truly the rescuer from the ocean of samsara.

One should drink the water that has washed the Guru's feet, which destroys the root of ignorance and prevents the cycle of birth and karma, for the accomplishment of knowledge and dispassion.

Drinking the water that has washed the Guru's feet, consuming the Guru's leftover food, constant meditation upon the Guru's form, and perpetual recitation of the Guru's name.

The chanting of one's own guru's name becomes the chanting of the infinite Shiva; the contemplation of one's own guru's name becomes the contemplation of the infinite Shiva.
- verse 38यत्पादाम्बुजरेणुर्वै कोऽपि संसारवारिधौ ।सेतुबन्धायते नाथं देशिकं तमुपास्महे ॥ 34 ॥yatpādāmbujarēṇurvai kō'pi saṃsāravāridhau ।sētubandhāyatē nāthaṃ dēśikaṃ tamupāsmahē ॥ 34 ॥meaning
Whose foot-lotus dust becomes a bridge across the ocean of samsara for anyone—that master, that guide, we worship.

By whose grace alone sorrow and delusion perish—salutation to that supreme Self, the foremost of teachers.

By whose grace one casts off great ignorance, salutation to that Lord of Teachers for the accomplishment of desired ends.
- verse 41काशीक्षेत्रं निवासश्च जाह्नवी चरणोदकम् ।गुरुर्विश्वेश्वरः साक्षात् तारकं ब्रह्मनिश्चयः ॥ 37 ॥kāśīkṣētraṃ nivāsaścha jāhnavī charaṇōdakam ।gururviśvēśvaraḥ sākṣāt tārakaṃ brahmaniśchayaḥ ॥ 37 ॥meaning
Kashi is the dwelling-place, the Ganges is the foot-water; the Guru is Vishveshvara himself, the direct liberator and the certainty of Brahman.
- verse 42गुरुसेवा गया प्रोक्ता देहः स्यादक्षयो वटः ।तत्पादं विष्णुपादं स्यात् तत्र दत्तमनस्ततम् ॥ 38 ॥gurusēvā gayā prōktā dēhaḥ syādakṣayō vaṭaḥ ।tatpādaṃ viṣṇupādaṃ syāt tatra dattamanastatam ॥ 38 ॥meaning
Service to the Guru is declared to be Gaya; the body becomes an imperishable banyan tree, and that foot becomes Vishnu's foot—there the mind, once offered, remains.
- verse 43गुरुमूर्तिं स्मरेन्नित्यं गुरोर्नाम सदा जपेत् ।गुरोराज्ञां प्रकुर्वीत गुरोरन्यं न भावयेत् ॥ 39 ॥gurumūrtiṃ smarēnnityaṃ gurōrnāma sadā japēt ।gurōrājñāṃ prakurvīta gurōranyaṃ na bhāvayēt ॥ 39 ॥meaning
Remember the Guru's form constantly, ever recite the Guru's name, execute the Guru's command, and harbor no other thought than the Guru.
- verse 44गुरुवक्त्रे स्थितं ब्रह्म प्राप्यते तत्प्रसादतः ।गुरोर्ध्यानं सदा कुर्यात् कुलस्त्री स्वपतिं यथा ॥ 40 ॥guruvaktrē sthitaṃ brahma prāpyatē tatprasādataḥ ।gurōrdhyānaṃ sadā kuryāt kulastrī svapatiṃ yathā ॥ 40 ॥meaning
Brahman, dwelling in the Guru's mouth, is attained through his grace; thus the disciple should meditate on the Guru always, as a devoted wife upon her husband.
- verse 45स्वाश्रमं च स्वजातिं च स्वकीर्तिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।एतत्सर्वं परित्यज्य गुरुमेव समाश्रयेत् ॥ 41 ॥svāśramaṃ cha svajātiṃ cha svakīrtiṃ puṣṭivardhanam ।ētatsarvaṃ parityajya gurumēva samāśrayēt ॥ 41 ॥meaning
Abandoning one's own station, one's own caste, one's own glory and all that nourishes prosperity, one should take sole refuge in the Guru.
- verse 46अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो ये सुलभं परमं सुखम् ।तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गुरोराराधनं कुरु ॥ 42 ॥ananyāśchintayantō yē sulabhaṃ paramaṃ sukham ।tasmātsarvaprayatnēna gurōrārādhanaṃ kuru ॥ 42 ॥meaning
Those who meditate without division of mind attain easily the supreme bliss; therefore with all effort worship the Guru.
- verse 47गुरुवक्त्रे स्थिता विद्या गुरुभक्त्या च लभ्यते ।त्रैलोक्ये स्फुटवक्तारो देवर्षिपितृमानवाः ॥ 43 ॥guruvaktrē sthitā vidyā gurubhaktyā cha labhyatē ।trailōkyē sphuṭavaktārō dēvarṣipitṛmānavāḥ ॥ 43 ॥meaning
Knowledge dwells in the guru's mouth and is attained through devotion to the guru; in the three worlds, the eloquent speakers are gods, seers, ancestors, and humans.
- verse 48गुकारश्चान्धकारो हि रुकारस्तेज उच्यते ।अज्ञानग्रासकं ब्रह्म गुरुरेव न संशयः ॥ 44 ॥gukāraśchāndhakārō hi rukārastēja uchyatē ।ajñānagrāsakaṃ brahma gururēva na saṃśayaḥ ॥ 44 ॥meaning
The syllable gu is darkness, ru is declared to be light; the Guru is verily Brahman that devours ignorance—of this there is no doubt.

The syllable gu denotes darkness, and ru means the destroyer of that darkness; thus the Guru is named, being the annihilator of ignorance.

Thus the Guru's state is supreme, difficult even for the gods to attain, and is worshipped by the celestial choirs of Haha and Huhu gandharvas and others.

The syllable gu transcends qualities, the syllable ru is devoid of form; whoever imparts that which is beyond qualities and formless is remembered as the guru.

The three-eyed Shiva is direct, and Hari is remembered as two-armed, while Brahma, who has four faces, is declared to be the Sri Guru, beloved.

This anjali (prayer-gesture) is bound by me for the perfection of the ocean-of-compassion, by whose grace the living being becomes the partaker of liberation from the variegated cycle of existence.

The Guru is the liberator of families and millions of families in that very instant; knowing thus the true Guru, one should bow to him three times daily.

In the direction where the blessed Lord's dual feet shine forth, in that direction one should bow with devotion daily, beloved.

Through eight-limbed prostration, one should worship the Guru with constant praise; from such devotion steadiness is attained, and one becomes absorbed in one's own true nature.

The eight-limbed salutation is declared to be with the arms, feet, knees, chest, head, eyes, mind, and speech.

Let this constant obeisance be cast toward that direction with fragrant flowers, where the Bhagavān Guru-Chakravartin dwells, the eternal witness of the world's creation, sustenance, and dissolution drama.
- verse 105अभ्यस्तैः किमु दीर्घकालविमलैर्व्याधिप्रदैर्दुष्करैःप्राणायामशतैरनेककरणैर्दुःखात्मकैर्दुर्जयैः ।यस्मिन्नभ्युदिते विनश्यति बली वायुः स्वयं तत्क्षणात्प्राप्तुं तत्सहजस्वभावमनिशं सेवेत चैकं गुरुम् ॥ 100 ॥abhyastaiḥ kimu dīrghakālavimalairvyādhipradairduṣkaraiḥprāṇāyāmaśatairanēkakaraṇairduḥkhātmakairdurjayaiḥ ।yasminnabhyuditē vinaśyati balī vāyuḥ svayaṃ tatkṣaṇātprāptuṃ tatsahajasvabhāvamaniśaṃ sēvēta chaikaṃ gurum ॥ 100 ॥meaning
What use are hundreds of pranayamas, practiced long and carefully, disease-producing and difficult, involving many techniques and filled with suffering—hard to master—when the vital breath itself is destroyed instantly upon the Guru's arising, so to attain that natural state eternally, one should serve the one Guru alone.

Celestial beings, musicians of heaven, gandharvas, ancestors, yakṣas, and even Tumbura—the sages do not know the method of serving the Guru.

Intoxicated by great ego and the power of knowledge, beings wander in this world of saṃsāra as a pot-wheel revolves again and again.

Even ritualists are not liberated, nor are yogis likewise liberated; ascetics too remain unliberated when they turn away from the truth of the Guru.
- verse 113न मुक्तास्तु च गन्धर्वाः पितृयक्षास्तु चारणाः ।ऋषयः सिद्धदेवाद्या गुरुसेवापराङ्मुखाः ॥ 108 ॥na muktāstu cha gandharvāḥ pitṛyakṣāstu chāraṇāḥ ।ṛṣayaḥ siddhadēvādyā gurusēvāparāṅmukhāḥ ॥ 108 ॥meaning
Gandharvas, ancestors, demons, and celestial beings—nor sages, siddhas, and gods—are liberated when they turn their faces away from service to the Guru.
