- verse 2व्यास उवाच ।शृण्वन्तु ऋषयस्सर्वे शीघ्रं सङ्कल्पसाधनम् ।सकृदुच्चारमात्रेण भोगमोक्षप्रदायकम् ॥ 2 ॥vyāsa uvācha ।śṛṇvantu ṛṣayassarvē śīghraṃ saṅkalpasādhanam ।sakṛduchchāramātrēṇa bhōgamōkṣapradāyakam ॥ 2 ॥meaning
Vyasa replies: hear, all sages, this swift means of fulfilling intentions, which bestows worldly enjoyment and liberation by a single recitation.

and many networks of tantras have I heard from you; now I wish especially to behold the surface of the earth.

yet displaying marvellous composure, possessing a diamond-hard body, effortless and untired, dwelling at ease.

Then the tiger fled in fear from the fleeing deer; seeing this marvel, Parvati spoke to Shankara.

Parvati exclaimed: 'What a marvel, what a marvel — look ahead, O Shambhu!' Shambhu, that knower of the Puranas, looked and replied.

Shankara said: 'Gauri, I shall tell you something marvellous beyond speech and mind — a thing never seen by us anywhere.'

Each day he goes into the forest and diligently gathers sacred kindling-sticks, kusha-grass, flowers, roots, bulbs, and fruits.

O beloved, he first offers these to the great sages without any wish for return, and those entirely silent sages show him compassion in turn.

The great yogi Daladana, dwelling in his own hermitage, once recalled the perfected sky-clad one, Dattatreya.

Seeing him, the great sage Daladana, filled with wonder and joy, worshipped him and then spoke to Dattatreya who sat quietly before him.

whether with devotion or without, whoever remembers my name with undivided mind — to that person I immediately go and grant their desire.'

Dattatreya spoke to the sage-lord Daladana: 'Choose whatever you wish, since you have brought me here by remembering me.'

The sage said to Dattatreya: 'I say nothing at all — give me whatever abides in your own mind, O best of sages.'

Sri Dattatreya said: 'I have a diamond armour — take it,' speaking it to the sage who consented, beginning with the seer and metre.

Viniyoga (ritual application): The seer of this Sri Dattatreya Vajra Kavacham is Mahärudra in the form of a hunter; the meter is Anushtup; the deity is Sri Dattatreya; the seed syllable is 'Dram'; the power is 'Am'; the pin is 'Kraum'. This is employed for the attainment of Sri Dattatreya's grace through japa.

Dhyanam: I bow to Dattatreya — root of the universe's sprouting, embodiment of being-consciousness-bliss, the moon among lords of yogis, the supreme Self.

He becomes a renouncer, enjoyer, great yogi, free from both joy and sorrow, with every intention fulfilled — a living-liberated soul henceforth.

The tribal Durashravan, who happened to overhear it at that time, became diamond-bodied merely by hearing it once.

This alone is the supreme means for dharma, wealth, desire, and liberation, bestowing all sovereignty over elephant-cavalry, horse, chariot, and infantry.

ailments born of the nine planets and arising from great sins — all these diseases surely perish upon a thousand repetitions.

One desiring vigour at the root of the ashvattha; those desiring women in the mango grove; one seeking knowledge at the root of the tulasi; in the inner chamber by those desiring a child.

By those desiring wealth in a good field; by those desiring cattle in a cow-pen; in a temple for all desires — all is revealed at the right time.

One who stands waist-deep in water and recites looking at the sun gains victory in battle or in debate by a thousand repetitions.
- verse 107कण्ठमात्रे जले स्थित्वा यो रात्रौ कवचं पठेत् ।ज्वरापस्मारकुष्ठादि तापज्वरनिवारणम् ॥ 47 ॥kaṇṭhamātrē jalē sthitvā yō rātrau kavachaṃ paṭhēt ।jvarāpasmārakuṣṭhādi tāpajvaranivāraṇam ॥ 47 ॥meaning
One who stands neck-deep in water and recites the armour at night is freed from fever, epilepsy, leprosy, and all burning fevers.

Whatever is fixed and troublesome in any place shall be removed; one should recite there, and success shall surely follow.

Thus did Shiva tell Parvati this supreme auspicious secret: whoever recites this Vajra armour becomes equal to Dattatreya.
- verse 110एवं शिवेन कथितं हिमवत्सुतायैप्रोक्तं दलादमुनयेऽत्रिसुतेन पूर्वम् ।यः कोऽपि वज्रकवचं पठतीह लोकेदत्तोपमश्चरति योगिवरश्चिरायुः ॥ 50 ॥ēvaṃ śivēna kathitaṃ himavatsutāyaiprōktaṃ dalādamunayē'trisutēna pūrvam ।yaḥ kō'pi vajrakavachaṃ paṭhatīha lōkēdattōpamaścharati yōgivaraśchirāyuḥ ॥ 50 ॥meaning
Colophon: this was told by Shiva to the daughter of the mountain, and earlier by Atri's son to the sage Daladana — whoever recites this Vajra armour in this world moves about equal to Datta, as a supreme yogi, long-lived.
