• verse 1

  निशमय्य तवाथ यानवार्तां भृशमार्ताः पशुपालबालिकास्ताः ।किमिदं किमिदं कथं न्वितीमाः समवेताः परिदेवितान्यकुर्वन् ॥1॥

  niśamayya tavātha yānavārtāṃ bhṛśamārtāḥ paśupālabālikāstāḥ ।kimidaṃ kimidaṃ kathaṃ nvitīmāḥ samavētāḥ paridēvitānyakurvan ॥1॥

  meaning

  Having heard of your impending departure, the cowherd girls were greatly grieved; 'what is this, what is this, how can it be?' — these were the questions they asked each other gathered together.

• verse 2

  करुणानिधिरेष नन्दसूनुः कथमस्मान् विसृजेदनन्यनाथाः ।बत नः किमु दैवमेवमासीदिति तास्त्वद्गतमानसा विलेपुः ॥2॥

  karuṇānidhirēṣa nandasūnuḥ kathamasmān visṛjēdananyanāthāḥ ।bata naḥ kimu daivamēvamāsīditi tāstvadgatamānasā vilēpuḥ ॥2॥

  meaning

  This compassionate Krishna, Nanda's son — how will he abandon us who have no other lord? Alas, what was our fate that it has come to this? — thus they cried with minds fixed only on you.

• verse 3

  चरमप्रहरे प्रतिष्ठमानः सह पित्रा निजमित्रमण्डलैश्च ।परितापभरं नितम्बिनीनां शमयिष्यन् व्यमुचः सखायमेकम् ॥3॥

  charamapraharē pratiṣṭhamānaḥ saha pitrā nijamitramaṇḍalaiścha ।paritāpabharaṃ nitambinīnāṃ śamayiṣyan vyamuchaḥ sakhāyamēkam ॥3॥

  meaning

  At the last watch of the night, just as you were about to set out with your father and your circle of friends, you sent one companion to still the burning grief of the curved-hipped women.

  अचिरादुपयामि सन्निधिं वो भविता साधु मयैव सङ्गमश्रीः ।अमृताम्बुनिधौ निमज्जयिष्ये द्रुतमित्याश्वसिता वधूरकार्षीः ॥4॥

  achirādupayāmi sannidhiṃ vō bhavitā sādhu mayaiva saṅgamaśrīḥ ।amṛtāmbunidhau nimajjayiṣyē drutamityāśvasitā vadhūrakārṣīḥ ॥4॥

  meaning

  I will return to your presence very soon; the wealth of our union shall come about through me alone; I shall plunge you swiftly into the ocean of nectar — with these words you comforted the young women.

• verse 5

  सविषादभरं सयाच्ञमुच्चैः अतिदूरं वनिताभिरीक्ष्यमाणः ।मृदु तद्दिशि पातयन्नपाङ्गान् सबलोऽक्रूररथेन निर्गतोऽभूः ॥5॥

  saviṣādabharaṃ sayāchñamuchchaiḥ atidūraṃ vanitābhirīkṣyamāṇaḥ ।mṛdu taddiśi pātayannapāṅgān sabalō'krūrarathēna nirgatō'bhūḥ ॥5॥

  meaning

  Gazing after you from afar with eyes filled with grief and longing as you departed, you gently cast sideward glances in their direction — then you departed with Balarama in Akrura's chariot.

• verse 6

  अनसा बहुलेन वल्लवानां मनसा चानुगतोऽथ वल्लभानाम् ।वनमार्तमृगं विषण्णवृक्षं समतीतो यमुनातटीमयासीः ॥6॥

  anasā bahulēna vallavānāṃ manasā chānugatō'tha vallabhānām ।vanamārtamṛgaṃ viṣaṇṇavṛkṣaṃ samatītō yamunātaṭīmayāsīḥ ॥6॥

  meaning

  Followed in thought by the hearts of the cowherds and in mind by the hearts of their beloved ones, you passed through the distressed forest, the sad deer, the cheerless trees and reached the banks of the Yamuna.

• verse 7

  नियमाय निमज्य वारिणि त्वामभिवीक्ष्याथ रथेऽपि गान्दिनेयः ।विवशोऽजनि किं न्विदं विभोस्ते ननु चित्रं त्ववलोकनं समन्तात् ॥7॥

  niyamāya nimajya vāriṇi tvāmabhivīkṣyātha rathē'pi gāndinēyaḥ ।vivaśō'jani kiṃ nvidaṃ vibhōstē nanu chitraṃ tvavalōkanaṃ samantāt ॥7॥

  meaning

  Gandineyya Akrura — to regulate himself — plunged into the water; having bathed in it he saw you in the chariot and was overcome; 'what then can this be?' he marvelled at your all-encompassing vision.

• verse 8

  पुनरेष निमज्य पुण्यशाली पुरुषं त्वां परमं भुजङ्गभोगे ।अरिकम्बुगदाम्बुजैः स्फुरन्तं सुरसिद्धौघपरीतमालुलोके ॥8॥

  punarēṣa nimajya puṇyaśālī puruṣaṃ tvāṃ paramaṃ bhujaṅgabhōgē ।arikambugadāmbujaiḥ sphurantaṃ surasiddhaughaparītamālulōkē ॥8॥

  meaning

  Then that most fortunate one, having plunged in again, saw you the supreme Purusha reclining on the serpent couch — blazing with conch, discus, mace, and lotus — surrounded by hosts of gods and siddhas.

• verse 9

  स तदा परमात्मसौख्यसिन्धौ विनिमग्नः प्रणुवन् प्रकारभेदैः ।अविलोक्य पुनश्च हर्षसिन्धोरनुवृत्त्या पुलकावृतो ययौ त्वाम् ॥9॥

  sa tadā paramātmasaukhyasindhau vinimagnaḥ praṇuvan prakārabhēdaiḥ ।avilōkya punaścha harṣasindhōranuvṛttyā pulakāvṛtō yayau tvām ॥9॥

  meaning

  He, plunged into the ocean of the bliss of the supreme Self, praising you in various ways with joined palms — not seeing you again and overcome with the flood of joy — departed with you, covered with his hair standing on end.

• verse 10

  किमु शीतलिमा महान् जले यत् पुलकोऽसाविति चोदितेन तेन ।अतिहर्षनिरुत्तरेण सार्धं रथवासी पवनेश पाहि मां त्वम् ॥10॥

  kimu śītalimā mahān jalē yat pulakō'sāviti chōditēna tēna ।atiharṣaniruttarēṇa sārdhaṃ rathavāsī pavanēśa pāhi māṃ tvam ॥10॥

  meaning

  Since the coolness of the water would explain the gooseflesh, someone asked him 'why this gooseflesh?' and he, overcome with extreme joy and unable to answer, travelled onward — O Lord of Wind (Guruvayurappa), protect me.
