- verse 1कदाचिद्गोपालान् विहितमखसम्भारविभवान्निरीक्ष्य त्वं शौरे मघवमदमुद्ध्वंसितुमनाः ।विजानन्नप्येतान् विनयमृदु नन्दादिपशुपा-नपृच्छः को वाऽयं जनक भवतामुद्यम इति ॥1॥kadāchidgōpālān vihitamakhasambhāravibhavānnirīkṣya tvaṃ śaurē maghavamadamuddhvaṃsitumanāḥ ।vijānannapyētān vinayamṛdu nandādipaśupā-napṛchChaḥ kō vā'yaṃ janaka bhavatāmudyama iti ॥1॥meaning
On one occasion, O Shouri, seeing the cowherds occupied with the preparations of a sacrifice, you resolved in your mind to break Indra's arrogance; knowing all this yet feigning ignorance, with gentle humility you asked Nanda and the other cowherds.
- verse 2बभाषे नन्दस्त्वां सुत ननु विधेयो मघवतोमखो वर्षे वर्षे सुखयति स वर्षेण पृथिवीम् ।नृणां वर्षायत्तं निखिलमुपजीव्यं महितलेविशेषादस्माकं तृणसलिलजीवा हि पशवः ॥2॥babhāṣē nandastvāṃ suta nanu vidhēyō maghavatōmakhō varṣē varṣē sukhayati sa varṣēṇa pṛthivīm ।nṛṇāṃ varṣāyattaṃ nikhilamupajīvyaṃ mahitalēviśēṣādasmākaṃ tṛṇasalilajīvā hi paśavaḥ ॥2॥meaning
Nanda spoke to you: "Son, the sacrifice to Maghava (Indra) is prescribed — it gladdens him season after season with rain; for all that humans live by on earth depends on rain."
- verse 3इति श्रुत्वा वाचं पितुरयि भवानाह सरसंधिगेतन्नो सत्यं मघवजनिता वृष्टिरिति यत् ।अदृष्टं जीवानां सृजति खलु वृष्टिं समुचितांमहारण्ये वृक्षाः किमिव बलिमिन्द्राय ददते ॥3॥iti śrutvā vāchaṃ piturayi bhavānāha sarasaṃdhigētannō satyaṃ maghavajanitā vṛṣṭiriti yat ।adṛṣṭaṃ jīvānāṃ sṛjati khalu vṛṣṭiṃ samuchitāṃmahāraṇyē vṛkṣāḥ kimiva balimindrāya dadatē ॥3॥meaning
Hearing your father's words, O you, you answered delightfully: "It is wrong to say that the rain comes from Indra; the unseen merit of living beings creates the fitting rain —"
- verse 4इदं तावत् सत्यं यदिह पशवो नः कुलधनंतदाजीव्यायासौ बलिरचलभर्त्रे समुचितः ।सुरेभ्योऽप्युत्कृष्टा ननु धरणिदेवाः क्षितितलेततस्तेऽप्याराध्या इति जगदिथ त्वं निजजनान् ॥4॥idaṃ tāvat satyaṃ yadiha paśavō naḥ kuladhanaṃtadājīvyāyāsau balirachalabhartrē samuchitaḥ ।surēbhyō'pyutkṛṣṭā nanu dharaṇidēvāḥ kṣititalētatastē'pyārādhyā iti jagaditha tvaṃ nijajanān ॥4॥meaning
"— this much at least is true: cattle are our family's wealth, and therefore a fitting offering belongs to the sustainer of the mountain; the brahmanas are superior even to the gods on earth —"
- verse 5भवद्वाचं श्रुत्वा बहुमतियुतास्तेऽपि पशुपाःद्विजेन्द्रानर्चन्तो बलिमददुरुच्चैः क्षितिभृते ।व्यधुः प्रादक्षिण्यं सुभृशमनमन्नादरयुता-स्त्वमादश्शैलात्मा बलिमखिलमाभीरपुरतः ॥5॥bhavadvāchaṃ śrutvā bahumatiyutāstē'pi paśupāḥdvijēndrānarchantō balimadaduruchchaiḥ kṣitibhṛtē ।vyadhuḥ prādakṣiṇyaṃ subhṛśamanamannādarayutā-stvamādaśśailātmā balimakhilamābhīrapurataḥ ॥5॥meaning
Having heard your words, those cowherds, filled with great regard, worshipped the brahmanas and offered an abundant tribute to the lord of the mountain.
- verse 6अवोचश्चैवं तान् किमिह वितथं मे निगदितंगिरीन्द्रो नन्वेष स्वबलिमुपभुङ्क्ते स्ववपुषा ।अयं गोत्रो गोत्रद्विषि च कुपिते रक्षितुमलंसमस्तानित्युक्ता जहृषुरखिला गोकुलजुषः ॥6॥avōchaśchaivaṃ tān kimiha vitathaṃ mē nigaditaṃgirīndrō nanvēṣa svabalimupabhuṅktē svavapuṣā ।ayaṃ gōtrō gōtradviṣi cha kupitē rakṣitumalaṃsamastānityuktā jahṛṣurakhilā gōkulajuṣaḥ ॥6॥meaning
And you spoke to them thus: "Is anything I have said untrue? This mountain lord himself partakes of his tribute directly in his own body; this clan is named Gotra (the mountain) — and if Gotra's enemy becomes angry, this mountain will protect us."
- verse 7परिप्रीता याताः खलु भवदुपेता व्रजजुषोव्रजं यावत्तावन्निजमखविभङ्गं निशमयन् ।भवन्तं जानन्नप्यधिकरजसाऽऽक्रान्तहृदयोन सेहे देवेन्द्रस्त्वदुपरचितात्मोन्नतिरपि ॥7॥pariprītā yātāḥ khalu bhavadupētā vrajajuṣōvrajaṃ yāvattāvannijamakhavibhaṅgaṃ niśamayan ।bhavantaṃ jānannapyadhikarajasā''krāntahṛdayōna sēhē dēvēndrastvaduparachitātmōnnatirapi ॥7॥meaning
The villagers, delighted at heart, returned having come with you, when Indra learned the breaking of his sacrifice and could not bear it.
- verse 8मनुष्यत्वं यातो मधुभिदपि देवेष्वविनयंविधत्ते चेन्नष्टस्त्रिदशसदसां कोऽपि महिमा ।ततश्च ध्वंसिष्ये पशुपहतकस्य श्रियमितिप्रवृत्तस्त्वां जेतुं स किल मघवा दुर्मदनिधिः ॥8॥manuṣyatvaṃ yātō madhubhidapi dēvēṣvavinayaṃvidhattē chēnnaṣṭastridaśasadasāṃ kō'pi mahimā ।tataścha dhvaṃsiṣyē paśupahatakasya śriyamitipravṛttastvāṃ jētuṃ sa kila maghavā durmadanidhiḥ ॥8॥meaning
"If even Madhava who has taken human birth shows irreverence to the gods, no greatness of the divine assembly remains; therefore I will destroy the prosperity of the wretched cowherd."
- verse 9त्वदावासं हन्तुं प्रलयजलदानम्बरभुविप्रहिण्वन् बिभ्राण; कुलिशमयमभ्रेभगमनः ।प्रतस्थेऽन्यैरन्तर्दहनमरुदाद्यैविंहसितोभवन्माया नैव त्रिभुवनपते मोहयति कम् ॥9॥tvadāvāsaṃ hantuṃ pralayajaladānambarabhuviprahiṇvan bibhrāṇa; kuliśamayamabhrēbhagamanaḥ ।pratasthē'nyairantardahanamarudādyaiviṃhasitōbhavanmāyā naiva tribhuvanapatē mōhayati kam ॥9॥meaning
Sending the doomsday rain-clouds through the sky above your dwelling, bearing the thunderbolt and riding the elephant of heaven, he set out — mocked internally by fire, wind, and the rest.
- verse 10सुरेन्द्रः क्रुद्धश्चेत् द्विजकरुणया शैलकृपयाऽ-प्यनातङ्कोऽस्माकं नियत इति विश्वास्य पशुपान् ।अहो किन्नायातो गिरिभिदिति सञ्चिन्त्य निवसन्मरुद्गेहाधीश प्रणुद मुरवैरिन् मम गदान् ॥10॥surēndraḥ kruddhaśchēt dvijakaruṇayā śailakṛpayā'-pyanātaṅkō'smākaṃ niyata iti viśvāsya paśupān ।ahō kinnāyātō giribhiditi sañchintya nivasanmarudgēhādhīśa praṇuda muravairin mama gadān ॥10॥meaning
After Indra's anger had completely subsided — by the compassion of the brahmanas and the kindness shown to the hill — you reassured the cowherds: "Fear nothing for certain" — then, O slayer of Madhu, why did the hill-splitter not come?
