• verse 1

  मदनातुरचेतसोऽन्वहं भवदङ्घ्रिद्वयदास्यकाम्यया ।यमुनातटसीम्नि सैकतीं तरलाक्ष्यो गिरिजां समार्चिचन् ॥1॥

  madanāturachētasō'nvahaṃ bhavadaṅghridvayadāsyakāmyayā ।yamunātaṭasīmni saikatīṃ taralākṣyō girijāṃ samārchichan ॥1॥

  meaning

  Daily, with minds eager for servanthood at your lotus-feet, the doe-eyed ones would worship Girijā on the sandy banks of the Yamunā.

• verse 2

  तव नामकथारताः समं सुदृशः प्रातरुपागता नदीम् ।उपहारशतैरपूजयन् दयितो नन्दसुतो भवेदिति ॥2॥

  tava nāmakathāratāḥ samaṃ sudṛśaḥ prātarupāgatā nadīm ।upahāraśatairapūjayan dayitō nandasutō bhavēditi ॥2॥

  meaning

  With their minds fixed on stories and songs of you, the lovely-eyed ones came together in the morning to the river and worshipped you with hundreds of offerings, praying 'May Nanda's son become our beloved.'

  इति मासमुपाहितव्रतास्तरलाक्षीरभिवीक्ष्य ता भवान् ।करुणामृदुलो नदीतटं समयासीत्तदनुग्रहेच्छया ॥3॥

  meaning

  Seeing those doe-eyed ones who had kept the vow for a month—you, compassionate and tender, came to the river bank with the desire to bestow grace on them.

  नियमावसितौ निजाम्बरं तटसीमन्यवमुच्य तास्तदा ।यमुनाजलखेलनाकुलाः पुरतस्त्वामवलोक्य लज्जिताः ॥4॥

  niyamāvasitau nijāmbaraṃ taṭasīmanyavamuchya tāstadā ।yamunājalakhēlanākulāḥ puratastvāmavalōkya lajjitāḥ ॥4॥

  meaning

  When the vow was concluded, they removed their garments on the bank and plunged into the Yamunā's waters—preoccupied with play, they were embarrassed to see you standing before them.

• verse 5

  त्रपया नमिताननास्वथो वनितास्वम्बरजालमन्तिके ।निहितं परिगृह्य भूरुहो विटपं त्वं तरसाऽधिरूढवान् ॥5॥

  trapayā namitānanāsvathō vanitāsvambarajālamantikē ।nihitaṃ parigṛhya bhūruhō viṭapaṃ tvaṃ tarasā'dhirūḍhavān ॥5॥

  meaning

  With faces bent down in shame, while the women stood there—you swiftly climbed up the branch of a tree near by, having taken their bundle of garments.

  इह तावदुपेत्य नीयतां वसनं वः सुदृशो यथायथम् ।इति नर्ममृदुस्मिते त्वयि ब्रुवति व्यामुमुहे वधूजनैः ॥6॥

  iha tāvadupētya nīyatāṃ vasanaṃ vaḥ sudṛśō yathāyatham ।iti narmamṛdusmitē tvayi bruvati vyāmumuhē vadhūjanaiḥ ॥6॥

  meaning

  As you sat there with a playful gentle smile and said to them: 'Come forward, each of you take your garment as appropriate'—the women were bewildered.

• verse 7

  अयि जीव चिरं किशोर नस्तव दासीरवशीकरोषि किम् ।प्रदिशाम्बरमम्बुजेक्षणेत्युदितस्त्वं स्मितमेव दत्तवान् ॥7॥

  ayi jīva chiraṃ kiśōra nastava dāsīravaśīkarōṣi kim ।pradiśāmbaramambujēkṣaṇētyuditastvaṃ smitamēva dattavān ॥7॥

  meaning

  'May you live long, O young man—why do you captivate us who are your servants?'—when they said this, begging their garments—you gave only a smile.

  अधिरुह्य तटं कृताञ्जलीः परिशुद्धाः स्वगतीर्निरीक्ष्य ताः ।वसनान्यखिलान्यनुग्रहं पुनरेवं गिरमप्यदा मुदा ॥8॥

  adhiruhya taṭaṃ kṛtāñjalīḥ pariśuddhāḥ svagatīrnirīkṣya tāḥ ।vasanānyakhilānyanugrahaṃ punarēvaṃ giramapyadā mudā ॥8॥

  meaning

  Climbing to the bank, having looked at them who were completely pure with their hands folded in reverence—you joyfully gave all the garments back and also spoke this word again.

• verse 9

  विदितं ननु वो मनीषितं वदितारस्त्विह योग्यमुत्तरम् ।यमुनापुलिने सचन्द्रिकाः क्षणदा इत्यबलास्त्वमूचिवान् ॥9॥

  viditaṃ nanu vō manīṣitaṃ vaditārastviha yōgyamuttaram ।yamunāpulinē sachandrikāḥ kṣaṇadā ityabalāstvamūchivān ॥9॥

  meaning

  'Your wish is known to me—I who am to speak the proper reply—you doe-eyed ones will know: on a moonlit night on the Yamunā sand.' So you said.

  उपकर्ण्य भवन्मुखच्युतं मधुनिष्यन्दि वचो मृगीदृशः ।प्रणयादयि वीक्ष्य वीक्ष्य ते वदनाब्जं शनकैर्गृहं गताः ॥10॥

  upakarṇya bhavanmukhachyutaṃ madhuniṣyandi vachō mṛgīdṛśaḥ ।praṇayādayi vīkṣya vīkṣya tē vadanābjaṃ śanakairgṛhaṃ gatāḥ ॥10॥

  meaning

  Hearing those words dripping honey that had fallen from your lips, the deer-eyed ones, with love, gazed and gazed at your lotus face and returned home slowly.

  इति नन्वनुगृह्य वल्लवीर्विपिनान्तेषु पुरेव सञ्चरन् ।करुणाशिशिरो हरे हर त्वरया मे सकलामयावलिम् ॥11॥

  iti nanvanugṛhya vallavīrvipināntēṣu purēva sañcharan ।karuṇāśiśirō harē hara tvarayā mē sakalāmayāvalim ॥11॥
