• verse 1

  अथ वारिणि घोरतरं फणिनंप्रतिवारयितुं कृतधीर्भगवन् ।द्रुतमारिथ तीरगनीपतरुंविषमारुतशोषितपर्णचयम् ॥1॥

  atha vāriṇi ghōrataraṃ phaṇinaṃprativārayituṃ kṛtadhīrbhagavan ।drutamāritha tīraganīpataruṃviṣamārutaśōṣitaparṇachayam ॥1॥

  meaning

  Then, O Lord, resolved to drive back the terrible serpent in the water, you swiftly climbed the kadamba tree on the bank, its leaves withered by the poisonous fumes.

• verse 2

  अधिरुह्य पदाम्बुरुहेण च तंनवपल्लवतुल्यमनोज्ञरुचा ।ह्रदवारिणि दूरतरं न्यपतःपरिघूर्णितघोरतरङ्ग्गणे ॥2॥

  adhiruhya padāmburuhēṇa cha taṃnavapallavatulyamanōjñaruchā ।hradavāriṇi dūrataraṃ nyapataḥparighūrṇitaghōrataraṅggaṇē ॥2॥

  meaning

  Climbing it with your lotus-foot, lovely as a fresh sprout, you leapt from afar into the pool-waters, whose dreadful waves began to whirl.

  भुवनत्रयभारभृतो भवतोगुरुभारविकम्पिविजृम्भिजला ।परिमज्जयति स्म धनुश्शतकंतटिनी झटिति स्फुटघोषवती ॥3॥

  bhuvanatrayabhārabhṛtō bhavatōgurubhāravikampivijṛmbhijalā ।parimajjayati sma dhanuśśatakaṃtaṭinī jhaṭiti sphuṭaghōṣavatī ॥3॥

  meaning

  Though bearing the burden of the three worlds, the river, shaken by your weight, with swelling waters, suddenly overflowed its banks for a hundred bow-lengths with loud roar.

• verse 4

  अथ दिक्षु विदिक्षु परिक्षुभित-भ्रमितोदरवारिनिनादभरैः ।उदकादुदगादुरगाधिपति-स्त्वदुपान्तमशान्तरुषाऽन्धमनाः ॥4॥

  atha dikṣu vidikṣu parikṣubhita-bhramitōdaravārininādabharaiḥ ।udakādudagāduragādhipati-stvadupāntamaśāntaruṣā'ndhamanāḥ ॥4॥

  meaning

  Then, stirred by the noise of his belly-waters tossed in every direction, the lord of serpents rose from the water, mind blind with unabating wrath, and came near you.

  फणशृङ्गसहस्रविनिस्सृमर-ज्वलदग्निकणोग्रविषाम्बुधरम् ।पुरतः फणिनं समलोकयथाबहुशृङ्गिणमञ्जनशैलमिव ॥5॥

  phaṇaśṛṅgasahasravinissṛmara-jvaladagnikaṇōgraviṣāmbudharam ।purataḥ phaṇinaṃ samalōkayathābahuśṛṅgiṇamañjanaśailamiva ॥5॥

  meaning

  With the spurting venomous water that spat out fire-sparks from his thousand hoods, you beheld before you that serpent like the mountain of collyrium with its many peaks.

• verse 6

  ज्वलदक्षि परिक्षरदुग्रविष-श्वसनोष्मभरः स महाभुजगः ।परिदश्य भवन्तमनन्तबलंसमवेष्टयदस्फुटचेष्टमहो ॥6॥

  jvaladakṣi parikṣaradugraviṣa-śvasanōṣmabharaḥ sa mahābhujagaḥ ।paridaśya bhavantamanantabalaṃsamavēṣṭayadasphuṭachēṣṭamahō ॥6॥

  meaning

  That great serpent, with blazing eyes, dripping fierce venom, hot with breath, bit you of infinite strength and coiled around you — yet you showed no movement, wondrous indeed.

• verse 7

  अविलोक्य भवन्तमथाकुलितेतटगामिनि बालकधेनुगणे ।व्रजगेहतलेऽप्यनिमित्तशतंसमुदीक्ष्य गता यमुनां पशुपाः ॥7॥

  avilōkya bhavantamathākulitētaṭagāmini bālakadhēnugaṇē ।vrajagēhatalē'pyanimittaśataṃsamudīkṣya gatā yamunāṃ paśupāḥ ॥7॥

  meaning

  Not seeing you, the cowherd children, cows, and cowherds, alarmed by a hundred inauspicious omens in the village houses too, came distressed to the Yamuna.

• verse 8

  अखिलेषु विभो भवदीय दशा-मवलोक्य जिहासुषु जीवभरम् ।फणिबन्धनमाशु विमुच्य जवा-दुदगम्यत हासजुषा भवता ॥8॥

  akhilēṣu vibhō bhavadīya daśā-mavalōkya jihāsuṣu jīvabharam ।phaṇibandhanamāśu vimuchya javā-dudagamyata hāsajuṣā bhavatā ॥8॥

  meaning

  O Lord, seeing all of them ready to give up their lives at your plight, quickly loosing the serpent's bonds and leaping up, you, with a smile, rose forth.

• verse 9

  अधिरुह्य ततः फणिराजफणान्ननृते भवता मृदुपादरुचा ।कलशिञ्जितनूपुरमञ्जुमिल-त्करकङ्कणसङ्कुलसङ्क्वणितम् ॥9॥

  adhiruhya tataḥ phaṇirājaphaṇānnanṛtē bhavatā mṛdupādaruchā ।kalaśiñjitanūpuramañjumila-tkarakaṅkaṇasaṅkulasaṅkvaṇitam ॥9॥

  meaning

  Then climbing upon the hoods of the serpent-king, you danced with soft gleaming feet, anklets tinkling sweetly, bracelets clanging together.

• verse 10

  जहृषुः पशुपास्तुतुषुर्मुनयोववृषुः कुसुमानि सुरेन्द्रगणाः ।त्वयि नृत्यति मारुतगेहपतेपरिपाहि स मां त्वमदान्तगदात् ॥10॥

  jahṛṣuḥ paśupāstutuṣurmunayōvavṛṣuḥ kusumāni surēndragaṇāḥ ।tvayi nṛtyati mārutagēhapatēparipāhi sa māṃ tvamadāntagadāt ॥10॥

  meaning

  The cowherds rejoiced, the sages were delighted, the gods rained flowers as you danced — O Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from my incurable illness.
