• verse 1

  अतीत्य बाल्यं जगतां पते त्वमुपेत्य पौगण्डवयो मनोज्ञम् ।उपेक्ष्य वत्सावनमुत्सवेन प्रावर्तथा गोगणपालनायाम् ॥1॥

  atītya bālyaṃ jagatāṃ patē tvamupētya paugaṇḍavayō manōjñam ।upēkṣya vatsāvanamutsavēna prāvartathā gōgaṇapālanāyām ॥1॥

  meaning

  Having passed childhood, O Lord of the worlds, you entered the attractive youth stage; abandoning the tending of calves with a festival, you began herding the cattle.

• verse 2

  उपक्रमस्यानुगुणैव सेयं मरुत्पुराधीश तव प्रवृत्तिः ।गोत्रापरित्राणकृतेऽवतीर्णस्तदेव देवाऽऽरभथास्तदा यत् ॥2॥

  upakramasyānuguṇaiva sēyaṃ marutpurādhīśa tava pravṛttiḥ ।gōtrāparitrāṇakṛtē'vatīrṇastadēva dēvā''rabhathāstadā yat ॥2॥

  meaning

  O master of Guruvayu, this your action was consistent with your purpose; you descended to protect the earth—then, O God, you began that very task.

  कदापि रामेण समं वनान्ते वनश्रियं वीक्ष्य चरन् सुखेन ।श्रीदामनाम्नः स्वसखस्य वाचा मोदादगा धेनुककाननं त्वम् ॥3॥

  kadāpi rāmēṇa samaṃ vanāntē vanaśriyaṃ vīkṣya charan sukhēna ।śrīdāmanāmnaḥ svasakhasya vāchā mōdādagā dhēnukakānanaṃ tvam ॥3॥

  meaning

  Once wandering happily in the forest with Balarama, seeing the forest beauty—at the words of your friend Shridama by name, you joyfully went to the Dhenuka forest.

  उत्तालतालीनिवहे त्वदुक्त्या बलेन धूतेऽथ बलेन दोर्भ्याम् ।मृदुः खरश्चाभ्यपतत्पुरस्तात् फलोत्करो धेनुकदानवोऽपि ॥4॥

  uttālatālīnivahē tvaduktyā balēna dhūtē'tha balēna dōrbhyām ।mṛduḥ kharaśchābhyapatatpurastāt phalōtkarō dhēnukadānavō'pi ॥4॥

  meaning

  At your words, Balarama shook the tall grove of palm trees with force and arms; both soft and hard fruit fell before him—the fruit heap of Dhenuka.

  समुद्यतो धैनुकपालनेऽहं कथं वधं धैनुकमद्य कुर्वे ।इतीव मत्वा ध्रुवमग्रजेन सुरौघयोद्धारमजीघनस्त्वम् ॥5॥

  samudyatō dhainukapālanē'haṃ kathaṃ vadhaṃ dhainukamadya kurvē ।itīva matvā dhruvamagrajēna suraughayōddhāramajīghanastvam ॥5॥

  meaning

  Thinking perhaps: I am the protector of the cattle herd; how now do I kill Dhenuka today?—thinking thus, certainly your elder brother slew the demon Dhenuka first.

• verse 6

  तदीयभृत्यानपि जम्बुकत्वेनोपागतानग्रजसंयुतस्त्वम् ।जम्बूफलानीव तदा निरास्थस्तालेषु खेलन् भगवन् निरास्थः ॥6॥

  tadīyabhṛtyānapi jambukatvēnōpāgatānagrajasaṃyutastvam ।jambūphalānīva tadā nirāsthastālēṣu khēlan bhagavan nirāsthaḥ ॥6॥

  meaning

  Even his servant-jackals who came in jackal form you also slew along with your elder brother; then as if the palm-fruits were Jambu fruits, you played with them in the trees without care.

• verse 7

  विनिघ्नति त्वय्यथ जम्बुकौघं सनामकत्वाद्वरुणस्तदानीम् ।भयाकुलो जम्बुकनामधेयं श्रुतिप्रसिद्धं व्यधितेति मन्ये ॥7॥

  vinighnati tvayyatha jambukaughaṃ sanāmakatvādvaruṇastadānīm ।bhayākulō jambukanāmadhēyaṃ śrutiprasiddhaṃ vyadhitēti manyē ॥7॥

  meaning

  As you were slaying the jackal-horde, Varuna sharing their name by coincidence became fearful; he established the name Jambuka as is well known in the Vedas.

• verse 8

  तवावतारस्य फलं मुरारे सञ्जातमद्येति सुरैर्नुतस्त्वम् ।सत्यं फलं जातमिहेति हासी बालैः समं तालफलान्यभुङ्क्थाः ॥8॥

  tavāvatārasya phalaṃ murārē sañjātamadyēti surairnutastvam ।satyaṃ phalaṃ jātamihēti hāsī bālaiḥ samaṃ tālaphalānyabhuṅkthāḥ ॥8॥

  meaning

  Hailed by the gods as 'the purpose of your descent is now accomplished'—you said with a smile 'truly the fruit here has come' and scattered the palm fruits among the boys.

• verse 9

  मधुद्रवस्रुन्ति बृहन्ति तानि फलानि मेदोभरभृन्ति भुक्त्वा ।तृप्तैश्च दृप्तैर्भवनं फलौघं वहद्भिरागाः खलु बालकैस्त्वम् ॥9॥

  madhudravasrunti bṛhanti tāni phalāni mēdōbharabhṛnti bhuktvā ।tṛptaiścha dṛptairbhavanaṃ phalaughaṃ vahadbhirāgāḥ khalu bālakaistvam ॥9॥

  meaning

  Having eaten those large fruits dripping with sweet juice, full of fat—satisfied and elated, they returned home carrying loads of fruit.

• verse 10

  हतो हतो धेनुक इत्युपेत्य फलान्यदद्भिर्मधुराणि लोकैः ।जयेति जीवेति नुतो विभो त्वं मरुत्पुराधीश्वर पाहि रोगात् ॥10॥

  hatō hatō dhēnuka ityupētya phalānyadadbhirmadhurāṇi lōkaiḥ ।jayēti jīvēti nutō vibhō tvaṃ marutpurādhīśvara pāhi rōgāt ॥10॥

  With the people who came forward and gave the sweet fruits saying 'Dhenuka is slain'—hailed as 'victory, long life', O Lord, O master of Guruvayu, protect me.
