    अन्यावतारनिकरेष्वनिरीक्षितं तेभूमातिरेकमभिवीक्ष्य तदाघमोक्षेब्रह्मा परीक्षितुमनाः परोक्षभावंनिन्येऽथ वत्सकगणान् प्रवितत्य मायाम्1

    anyāvatāranikarēṣvanirīkṣitaṃ bhūmātirēkamabhivīkṣya tadāghamōkṣēbrahmā parīkṣitumanāḥ sa parōkṣabhāvaṃninyē'tha vatsakagaṇān pravitatya māyām1
    meaning

    Beholding in you, after the deliverance of Agha, an excess of greatness not seen in any other incarnation, Brahma — wishing to test you, set his secret intent and stretched out his maya over the calf-host.

    Not seeing the calves, with the cowherd-children grown helpless — as if intending to bring them back, following the order of the creator, you, with mouth half-full of food, then went; the lotus-born hid the children who had been eating.

    vatsāyitastadanu gōpagaṇāyitastvaṃśikyādibhāṇḍamuralīgavalādirūpaḥprāgvadvihṛtya vipinēṣu chirāya sāyaṃtvaṃ māyayā'tha bahudhā vrajamāyayātha3
    meaning

    Then becoming yourself the calves, becoming the cowherd-host, the cooking-pots, the flutes, the buffalo-horns and so on — having sported in the woods all day as before, you came home in the evening, by maya entering Vraja in many forms.

    त्वामेव शिक्यगवलादिमयं दधानोभूयस्त्वमेव पशुवत्सकबालरूपःगोरूपिणीभिरपि गोपवधूमयीभि-रासादितोऽसि जननीभिरतिप्रहर्षात्4

    tvāmēva śikyagavalādimayaṃ dadhānōbhūyastvamēva paśuvatsakabālarūpaḥgōrūpiṇībhirapi gōpavadhūmayībhi-rāsāditō'si jananībhiratipraharṣāt4
    meaning

    You yourself bearing the form of pots and horns, you yourself again bearing the form of cattle, calves and children — you were welcomed even by the cow-formed and gopi-formed mothers with the greatest delight.

    jīvaṃ hi kañchidabhimānavaśātsvakīyaṃmatvā tanūja iti rāgabharaṃ vahantyaḥātmānamēva tu bhavantamavāpya sūnuṃprītiṃ yayurna kiyatīṃ vanitāścha gāvaḥ5
    meaning

    Indeed, those women and cows, having taken some life as their own through the bond of pride, calling him 'son' and bearing love's burden — really gained you yourself as their son, and felt no small joy.

    एवं प्रतिक्षणविजृम्भितहर्षभार-निश्शेषगोपगणलालितभूरिमूर्तिम्त्वामग्रजोऽपि बुबुधे किल वत्सरान्तेब्रह्मात्मनोरपि महान् युवयोर्विशेषः6

    ēvaṃ pratikṣaṇavijṛmbhitaharṣabhāra-niśśēṣagōpagaṇalālitabhūrimūrtimtvāmagrajō'pi bubudhē kila vatsarāntēbrahmātmanōrapi mahān yuvayōrviśēṣaḥ6
    meaning

    Thus your form, multiplied moment by moment with growing burden of joy, fondled by all the cowherd hosts — even your elder brother (Balarama) at last, after a year, recognized: 'between us two, even though both are great, there is a great difference between Brahman and the soul.'

    When at the end of the year Brahma, his discrimination dulled and confused, looked at the new and old calves and herd-boys, you showed him fresh ones with crowns and armlets, four-armed and of dark cloud-color.

    nārāyaṇākṛtimasaṅkhyatamāṃ nirīkṣyasarvatra sēvakamapi svamavēkṣya dhātāmāyānimagnahṛdayō vimumōha yāva-dēkō babhūvitha tadā kabalārdhapāṇiḥ9

    Beholding the innumerable Narayana-forms, and seeing himself too as a servant in each — the creator's heart was sunk in maya and bewildered, until you became one again, with half the morsel still in your hand.
