• verse 1

  पुरा हयग्रीवमहासुरेण षष्ठान्तरान्तोद्यदकाण्डकल्पे ।निद्रोन्मुखब्रह्ममुखात् हृतेषु वेदेष्वधित्सः किल मत्स्यरूपम् ॥1॥

  ---

  purā hayagrīvamahāsurēṇa ṣaṣṭhāntarāntōdyadakāṇḍakalpē ।nidrōnmukhabrahmamukhāt hṛtēṣu vēdēṣvadhitsaḥ kila matsyarūpam ॥1॥

  meaning

  Long ago, when the great demon Hayagriva stole the Vedas from the sleepy mouth of Brahma at the end of the sixth Manvantara, you resolved to retrieve them.

• verse 2

  सत्यव्रतस्य द्रमिलाधिभर्तुर्नदीजले तर्पयतस्तदानीम् ।कराञ्जलौ सञ्ज्वलिताकृतिस्त्वमदृश्यथाः कश्चन बालमीनः ॥2॥

  satyavratasya dramilādhibharturnadījalē tarpayatastadānīm ।karāñjalau sañjvalitākṛtistvamadṛśyathāḥ kaśchana bālamīnaḥ ॥2॥

  meaning

  When king Satyavrata, the lord of the Dravida country, was making water-offerings in a river, a tiny flame-form appeared in the hollow of his joined palms — and that was you.

• verse 3

  क्षिप्तं जले त्वां चकितं विलोक्य निन्येऽम्बुपात्रेण मुनिः स्वगेहम् ।स्वल्पैरहोभिः कलशीं च कूपं वापीं सरश्चानशिषे विभो त्वम् ॥3॥

  kṣiptaṃ jalē tvāṃ chakitaṃ vilōkya ninyē'mbupātrēṇa muniḥ svagēham ।svalpairahōbhiḥ kalaśīṃ cha kūpaṃ vāpīṃ saraśchānaśiṣē vibhō tvam ॥3॥

  meaning

  Seeing the tiny creature move in alarm in the water, the sage carried it home in his water-vessel; within a few days it outgrew the vessel, then the tank, the well, and the pond.

  योगप्रभावाद्भवदाज्ञयैव नीतस्ततस्त्वं मुनिना पयोधिम् ।पृष्टोऽमुना कल्पदिदृक्षुमेनं सप्ताहमास्वेति वदन्नयासीः ॥4॥

  yōgaprabhāvādbhavadājñayaiva nītastatastvaṃ muninā payōdhim ।pṛṣṭō'munā kalpadidṛkṣumēnaṃ saptāhamāsvēti vadannayāsīḥ ॥4॥

  meaning

  By your own command enacted through his yogic power, the sage then led you to the ocean; asked by him who was eager to see the end of the kalpa, you said: wait seven days.

  प्राप्ते त्वदुक्तेऽहनि वारिधारापरिप्लुते भूमितले मुनीन्द्रः ।सप्तर्षिभिः सार्धमपारवारिण्युद्घूर्णमानः शरणं ययौ त्वाम् ॥5॥

  prāptē tvaduktē'hani vāridhārāpariplutē bhūmitalē munīndraḥ ।saptarṣibhiḥ sārdhamapāravāriṇyudghūrṇamānaḥ śaraṇaṃ yayau tvām ॥5॥

  meaning

  On the day you had foretold, when the surface of the earth was covered by rising flood-waters, the chief of sages, together with the seven sages, floated on the boundless waters.

• verse 6

  धरां त्वदादेशकरीमवाप्तां नौरूपिणीमारुरुहुस्तदा तेतत्कम्पकम्प्रेषु च तेषु भूयस्त्वमम्बुधेराविरभूर्महीयान् ॥6॥

  dharāṃ tvadādēśakarīmavāptāṃ naurūpiṇīmāruruhustadā tētatkampakamprēṣu cha tēṣu bhūyastvamambudhērāvirabhūrmahīyān ॥6॥

  meaning

  They boarded the ship that earth, obedient to your command, had become; while they were tossed about in the rolling waves, you appeared greatly radiant in the form of a great fish.

• verse 7

  झषाकृतिं योजनलक्षदीर्घां दधानमुच्चैस्तरतेजसं त्वाम् ।निरीक्ष्य तुष्टा मुनयस्त्वदुक्त्या त्वत्तुङ्गशृङ्गे तरणिं बबन्धुः ॥7॥

  jhaṣākṛtiṃ yōjanalakṣadīrghāṃ dadhānamuchchaistaratējasaṃ tvām ।nirīkṣya tuṣṭā munayastvaduktyā tvattuṅgaśṛṅgē taraṇiṃ babandhuḥ ॥7॥

  meaning

  Seeing you in fish-form extending a hundred thousand yojanas, blazing with intense effulgence, the sages were delighted and by your instruction tied the ship to your great horn.

• verse 8

  आकृष्टनौको मुनिमण्डलाय प्रदर्शयन् विश्वजगद्विभागान् ।संस्तूयमानो नृवरेण तेन ज्ञानं परं चोपदिशन्नचारीः ॥8॥

  ākṛṣṭanaukō munimaṇḍalāya pradarśayan viśvajagadvibhāgān ।saṃstūyamānō nṛvarēṇa tēna jñānaṃ paraṃ chōpadiśannachārīḥ ॥8॥

  meaning

  Pulling the ship with the assembly of sages, showing them the division of all worlds, praised by king Satyavrata, you imparted the supreme knowledge —

• verse 9

  कल्पावधौ सप्तमुनीन् पुरोवत् प्रस्थाप्य सत्यव्रतभूमिपं तम् ।वैवस्वताख्यं मनुमादधानः क्रोधाद् हयग्रीवमभिद्रुतोऽभूः ॥9॥

  kalpāvadhau saptamunīn purōvat prasthāpya satyavratabhūmipaṃ tam ।vaivasvatākhyaṃ manumādadhānaḥ krōdhād hayagrīvamabhidrutō'bhūḥ ॥9॥

  meaning

  at the end of the kalpa, having dispatched the seven sages as before, making Satyavrata the next Manu called Vaivasvata —

• verse 10

  स्वतुङ्गशृङ्गक्षतवक्षसं तं निपात्य दैत्यं निगमान् गृहीत्वा ।विरिञ्चये प्रीतहृदे ददानः प्रभञ्जनागारपते प्रपायाः ॥10॥

  svatuṅgaśṛṅgakṣatavakṣasaṃ taṃ nipātya daityaṃ nigamān gṛhītvā ।viriñchayē prītahṛdē dadānaḥ prabhañjanāgārapatē prapāyāḥ ॥10॥

  meaning

  having slain the demon Hayagriva who had been struck on his chest by your elevated horn, and retrieving the Vedas from him, presenting them joyfully to Brahma — O Lord, please protect me.
