    Though full of compassion, hearing Bali speech, you intended to humble his arrogance — praising the demon lineage, you requested from him just three foot-measures of earth; who would not laugh when he replied "give me everything"?

    viśvēśaṃ māṃ tripadamiha kiṃ yāchasē bāliśastvaṃsarvāṃ bhūmiṃ vṛṇu kimamunētyālapattvāṃ sa dṛpyanyasmāddarpāt tripadaparipūrtyakṣamaḥ kṣēpavādānbandhaṃ chāsāvagamadatadarhō'pi gāḍhōpaśāntyai3
    meaning

    He said boastfully: "You are lord of the universe — why do you ask me for just three feet, foolish one? Take all the earth!" Since through that arrogance he was incapable of filling three steps, to cure his deep arrogance, even though he did not deserve it, he went to bondage.
