- verse 1प्रीत्या दैत्यस्तव तनुमहःप्रेक्षणात् सर्वथाऽपित्वामाराध्यन्नजित रचयन्नञ्जलिं सञ्जगाद ।मत्तः किं ते समभिलषितं विप्रसूनो वद त्वंवित्तं भक्तं भवनमवनीं वाऽपि सर्वं प्रदास्ये ॥1॥prītyā daityastava tanumahaḥprēkṣaṇāt sarvathā'pitvāmārādhyannajita rachayannañjaliṃ sañjagāda ।mattaḥ kiṃ tē samabhilaṣitaṃ viprasūnō vada tvaṃvittaṃ bhaktaṃ bhavanamavanīṃ vā'pi sarvaṃ pradāsyē ॥1॥meaning
The demon, seeing your magnificent form with great joy, worshipped you with reverence everywhere and said: "What do you desire from me, O son of a brahmin — speak; I will give wealth, devotee, a house, land, or anything at all."

Though full of compassion, hearing Bali speech, you intended to humble his arrogance — praising the demon lineage, you requested from him just three foot-measures of earth; who would not laugh when he replied "give me everything"?

He said boastfully: "You are lord of the universe — why do you ask me for just three feet, foolish one? Take all the earth!" Since through that arrogance he was incapable of filling three steps, to cure his deep arrogance, even though he did not deserve it, he went to bondage.

When asked whether three foot-measures would not please you, nor all the worlds satisfy — and when bali was willing to give water to you who desired to give — Shukra, perceiving your intent to test him, clearly said "do not give, this is Hari".
