- verse 1हिरण्याक्षे पोत्रिप्रवरवपुषा देव भवताहते शोकक्रोधग्लपितधृतिरेतस्य सहजः ।हिरण्यप्रारम्भः कशिपुरमरारातिसदसिप्रतिज्ञमातेने तव किल वधार्थं मधुरिपो ॥1॥hiraṇyākṣē pōtripravaravapuṣā dēva bhavatāhatē śōkakrōdhaglapitadhṛtirētasya sahajaḥ ।hiraṇyaprārambhaḥ kaśipuramarārātisadasipratijñamātēnē tava kila vadhārthaṃ madhuripō ॥1॥meaning
When you, O God, had slain Hiranyaksha in the form of the supreme Boar, his brother Hiranyakashipu — his composure shattered by grief and rage — took a dreadful vow before the assembly of the gods, enemies of the asuras.
- verse 2विधातारं घोरं स खलु तपसित्वा नचिरतःपुरः साक्षात्कुर्वन् सुरनरमृगाद्यैरनिधनम् ।वरं लब्ध्वा दृप्तो जगदिह भवन्नायकमिदंपरिक्षुन्दन्निन्द्रादहरत दिवं त्वामगणयन् ॥2॥vidhātāraṃ ghōraṃ sa khalu tapasitvā nachirataḥpuraḥ sākṣātkurvan suranaramṛgādyairanidhanam ।varaṃ labdhvā dṛptō jagadiha bhavannāyakamidaṃparikṣundannindrādaharata divaṃ tvāmagaṇayan ॥2॥meaning
Having performed fierce austerities and conjuring Brahma before him, he obtained the boon of invulnerability from god, human, beast, and the like, and grew arrogant, crushing this world that had you as its lord.
- verse 3निहन्तुं त्वां भूयस्तव पदमवाप्तस्य च रिपो-र्बहिर्दृष्टेरन्तर्दधिथ हृदये सूक्ष्मवपुषा ।नदन्नुच्चैस्तत्राप्यखिलभुवनान्ते च मृगयन्भिया यातं मत्वा स खलु जितकाशी निववृते ॥3॥nihantuṃ tvāṃ bhūyastava padamavāptasya cha ripō-rbahirdṛṣṭērantardadhitha hṛdayē sūkṣmavapuṣā ।nadannuchchaistatrāpyakhilabhuvanāntē cha mṛgayanbhiyā yātaṃ matvā sa khalu jitakāśī nivavṛtē ॥3॥meaning
When his enemy seized your realm, you hid yourself deep in the enemy's own heart in a subtle form to destroy him; roaring aloud, the enemy searched everywhere to the edges of all the worlds —
- verse 4ततोऽस्य प्रह्लादः समजनि सुतो गर्भवसतौमुनेर्वीणापाणेरधिगतभवद्भक्तिमहिमा ।स वै जात्या दैत्यः शिशुरपि समेत्य त्वयि रतिंगतस्त्वद्भक्तानां वरद परमोदाहरणताम् ॥4॥tatō'sya prahlādaḥ samajani sutō garbhavasataumunērvīṇāpāṇēradhigatabhavadbhaktimahimā ।sa vai jātyā daityaḥ śiśurapi samētya tvayi ratiṃgatastvadbhaktānāṃ varada paramōdāharaṇatām ॥4॥meaning
— and then was born to him his son Prahlada in the womb, who had received from the sage with the vina in hand the greatness of devotion to you; though by birth a demon, he was drawn to love of you from childhood.
- verse 5सुरारीणां हास्यं तव चरणदास्यं निजसुतेस दृष्ट्वा दुष्टात्मा गुरुभिरशिशिक्षच्चिरममुम् ।गुरुप्रोक्तं चासाविदमिदमभद्राय दृढमि-त्यपाकुर्वन् सर्वं तव चरणभक्त्यैव ववृधे ॥ 5 ॥surārīṇāṃ hāsyaṃ tava charaṇadāsyaṃ nijasutēsa dṛṣṭvā duṣṭātmā gurubhiraśiśikṣachchiramamum ।guruprōktaṃ chāsāvidamidamabhadrāya dṛḍhami-tyapākurvan sarvaṃ tava charaṇabhaktyaiva vavṛdhē ॥ 5 ॥meaning
His evil-souled father, finding it laughable that his own son was devoted to you the enemy of the demons, tried long to educate him away from it through his preceptors.
- verse 6अधीतेषु श्रेष्ठं किमिति परिपृष्टेऽथ तनयेभवद्भक्तिं वर्यामभिगदति पर्याकुलधृतिः ।गुरुभ्यो रोषित्वा सहजमतिरस्येत्यभिविदन्वधोपायानस्मिन् व्यतनुत भवत्पादशरणे ॥6॥adhītēṣu śrēṣṭhaṃ kimiti paripṛṣṭē'tha tanayēbhavadbhaktiṃ varyāmabhigadati paryākuladhṛtiḥ ।gurubhyō rōṣitvā sahajamatirasyētyabhividanvadhōpāyānasmin vyatanuta bhavatpādaśaraṇē ॥6॥meaning
When asked what he thought best among all things studied, the son declared devotion to you to be supreme — the father, his composure shattered, discovering his son's fixed intention, devised means of killing him.
- verse 7स शूलैराविद्धः सुबहु मथितो दिग्गजगणै-र्महासर्पैर्दष्टोऽप्यनशनगराहारविधुतः ।गिरीन्द्रवक्षिप्तोऽप्यहह! परमात्मन्नयि विभोत्वयि न्यस्तात्मत्वात् किमपि न निपीडामभजत ॥7॥sa śūlairāviddhaḥ subahu mathitō diggajagaṇai-rmahāsarpairdaṣṭō'pyanaśanagarāhāravidhutaḥ ।girīndravakṣiptō'pyahaha! paramātmannayi vibhōtvayi nyastātmatvāt kimapi na nipīḍāmabhajata ॥7॥meaning
He was impaled with lances, crushed greatly, trampled by elephants, bitten by great serpents, made to fast and given poison-food, cast from mountain tops — alas, O Supreme Self, O Lord, he who rested in you was unharmed by all this.
- verse 8ततः शङ्काविष्टः स पुनरतिदुष्टोऽस्य जनकोगुरूक्त्या तद्गेहे किल वरुणपाशैस्तमरुणत् ।गुरोश्चासान्निध्ये स पुनरनुगान् दैत्यतनयान्भवद्भक्तेस्तत्त्वं परममपि विज्ञानमशिषत् ॥8॥tataḥ śaṅkāviṣṭaḥ sa punaratiduṣṭō'sya janakōgurūktyā tadgēhē kila varuṇapāśaistamaruṇat ।gurōśchāsānnidhyē sa punaranugān daityatanayānbhavadbhaktēstattvaṃ paramamapi vijñānamaśiṣat ॥8॥meaning
Then that wicked father, seized by dread, had his son bound with Varuna's nooses by the preceptors' suggestion; when the preceptors were absent, the boy again led the demon-children in your direction.
