• verse 1

  पृथोस्तु नप्ता पृथुधर्मकर्मठःप्राचीनबर्हिर्युवतौ शतद्रुतौ ।प्रचेतसो नाम सुचेतसः सुता-नजीजनत्त्वत्करुणाङ्कुरानिव ॥1॥

  pṛthōstu naptā pṛthudharmakarmaṭhaḥprāchīnabarhiryuvatau śatadrutau ।prachētasō nāma suchētasaḥ sutā-najījanattvatkaruṇāṅkurāniva ॥1॥

  meaning

  Prachinabarhis, the grandson of Prithu, devoted to vast dharma, begot upon his young wife Shatadruti the ten Prachetas — high-minded sons who were like sprouts of your compassion.

• verse 2

  पितुः सिसृक्षानिरतस्य शासनाद्-भवत्तपस्याभिरता दशापि तेपयोनिधिं पश्चिममेत्य तत्तटेसरोवरं सन्ददृशुर्मनोहरम् ॥2॥

  pituḥ sisṛkṣāniratasya śāsanād-bhavattapasyābhiratā daśāpi tēpayōnidhiṃ paśchimamētya tattaṭēsarōvaraṃ sandadṛśurmanōharam ॥2॥

  meaning

  By their father's order, who was bent on creation, all ten given to your tapas reached the western ocean and beheld a charming lake on its shore.

  तदा भवत्तीर्थमिदं समागतोभवो भवत्सेवकदर्शनादृतः ।प्रकाशमासाद्य पुरः प्रचेतसा-मुपादिशत् भक्ततमस्तव स्तवम् ॥3॥

  tadā bhavattīrthamidaṃ samāgatōbhavō bhavatsēvakadarśanādṛtaḥ ।prakāśamāsādya puraḥ prachētasā-mupādiśat bhaktatamastava stavam ॥3॥

  meaning

  Then Bhava (Shiva), pleased to see your devotees, came to that holy spot of yours; appearing before the Prachetas the foremost of your devotees taught them your hymn.

• verse 4

  स्तवं जपन्तस्तममी जलान्तरेभवन्तमासेविषतायुतं समाः ।भवत्सुखास्वादरसादमीष्वियान्बभूव कालो ध्रुववन्न शीघ्रता ॥4॥

  stavaṃ japantastamamī jalāntarēbhavantamāsēviṣatāyutaṃ samāḥ ।bhavatsukhāsvādarasādamīṣviyānbabhūva kālō dhruvavanna śīghratā ॥4॥

  meaning

  Reciting that hymn within the waters they served you for ten thousand years; in the rasa of tasting your bliss the time felt brief — there was no haste, just like with Dhruva.

  तपोभिरेषामतिमात्रवर्धिभिःस यज्ञहिंसानिरतोऽपि पावितः ।पिताऽपि तेषां गृहयातनारद-प्रदर्शितात्मा भवदात्मतां ययौ ॥5॥

  tapōbhirēṣāmatimātravardhibhiḥsa yajñahiṃsāniratō'pi pāvitaḥ ।pitā'pi tēṣāṃ gṛhayātanārada-pradarśitātmā bhavadātmatāṃ yayau ॥5॥

  meaning

  By their ever-growing tapas even their father (Prachinabarhis), though absorbed in sacrificial slaughter, was purified; and Narada visiting his home revealed the Self to him and he attained your nature.

  कृपाबलेनैव पुरः प्रचेतसांप्रकाशमागाः पतगेन्द्रवाहनः ।विराजि चक्रादिवरायुधांशुभि-र्भुजाभिरष्टाभिरुदञ्चितद्युतिः ॥6॥

  kṛpābalēnaiva puraḥ prachētasāṃprakāśamāgāḥ patagēndravāhanaḥ ।virāji chakrādivarāyudhāṃśubhi-rbhujābhiraṣṭābhirudañchitadyutiḥ ॥6॥

  meaning

  By your grace alone you appeared before the Prachetas, mounted on the king of birds, splendid with the rays of disc and other excellent weapons in your eight arms, of upraised lustre.

  प्रचेतसां तावदयाचतामपित्वमेव कारुण्यभराद्वरानदाः ।भवद्विचिन्ताऽपि शिवाय देहिनांभवत्वसौ रुद्रनुतिश्च कामदा ॥7॥

  prachētasāṃ tāvadayāchatāmapitvamēva kāruṇyabharādvarānadāḥ ।bhavadvichintā'pi śivāya dēhināṃbhavatvasau rudranutiścha kāmadā ॥7॥

  meaning

  Even before the Prachetas asked, you out of fullness of mercy granted them the boons that even thought of you brings welfare to embodied beings, and that the hymn of Rudra (which they recited) too will fulfil all desires.

  अवाप्य कान्तां तनयां महीरुहांतया रमध्वं दशलक्षवत्सरीम् ।सुतोऽस्तु दक्षो ननु तत्क्षणाच्च मांप्रयास्यथेति न्यगदो मुदैव तान् ॥8॥

  avāpya kāntāṃ tanayāṃ mahīruhāṃtayā ramadhvaṃ daśalakṣavatsarīm ।sutō'stu dakṣō nanu tatkṣaṇāchcha māṃprayāsyathēti nyagadō mudaiva tān ॥8॥

  meaning

  Obtaining the lovely daughter of the trees, sport with her ten lakh years, may a son Daksha be born to you, then come to me at once — so you joyfully told them.

• verse 9

  ततश्च ते भूतलरोधिनस्तरून्क्रुधा दहन्तो द्रुहिणेन वारिताः ।द्रुमैश्च दत्तां तनयामवाप्य तांत्वदुक्तकालं सुखिनोऽभिरेमिरे ॥9॥

  tataścha tē bhūtalarōdhinastarūnkrudhā dahantō druhiṇēna vāritāḥ ।drumaiścha dattāṃ tanayāmavāpya tāṃtvaduktakālaṃ sukhinō'bhirēmirē ॥9॥

  meaning

  After that they angrily set fire to the trees that were obstructing the earth's surface; restrained by Brahma, they obtained the daughter offered by the trees and lived happily with her for the time you had set.

• verse 10

  अवाप्य दक्षं च सुतं कृताध्वराःप्रचेतसो नारदलब्धया धिया ।अवापुरानन्दपदं तथाविध-स्त्वमीश वातालयनाथ पाहि माम् ॥10॥

  avāpya dakṣaṃ cha sutaṃ kṛtādhvarāḥprachētasō nāradalabdhayā dhiyā ।avāpurānandapadaṃ tathāvidha-stvamīśa vātālayanātha pāhi mām ॥10॥

  meaning

  Having begot Daksha and performed sacrifices, the Prachetas by the wisdom received from Narada attained the abode of bliss — such are you, O Lord of the Wind-temple (Guruvayur), protect me!
