    जातस्य ध्रुवकुल एव तुङ्गकीर्ते-रङ्गस्य व्यजनि सुतः स वेननामा ।यद्दोषव्यथितमतिः स राजवर्य-स्त्वत्पादे निहितमना वनं गतोऽभूत् ॥1॥
    jātasya dhruvakula ēva tuṅgakīrtē-raṅgasya vyajani sutaḥ sa vēnanāmā ।yaddōṣavyathitamatiḥ sa rājavarya-stvatpādē nihitamanā vanaṃ gatō'bhūt ॥1॥
    meaning

    From Aṅga of lofty fame was born a son named Vena; with his mind deluded by his own faults, that best of kings—his mind fixed at your feet—went to the forest.

    पापोऽपि क्षितितलपालनाय वेनःपौराद्यैरुपनिहितः कठोरवीर्यः ।सर्वेभ्यो निजबलमेव सम्प्रशंसन्भूचक्रे तव यजनान्ययं न्यरौत्सीत् ॥2॥
    pāpō'pi kṣititalapālanāya vēnaḥpaurādyairupanihitaḥ kaṭhōravīryaḥ ।sarvēbhyō nijabalamēva sampraśaṃsanbhūchakrē tava yajanānyayaṃ nyarautsīt ॥2॥
    meaning

    Though sinful, Vena was placed as the earth's guardian by the citizens and elders—declaring only his own power above all, this one put a stop to all sacrifices for you on earth.

    samprāptē hitakathanāya tāpasaughēmattō'nyō bhuvanapatirna kaśchanēti ।tvannindāvachanaparō munīśvaraistaiḥśāpāgnau śalabhadaśāmanāyi vēnaḥ ॥3॥
    meaning

    When the crowds of sages came to counsel him for his good, Vena, who kept declaring no lord other than himself, was brought to the state of a moth in the fire of the sages' curse—speaking words that reviled you.

    तन्नाशात् खलजनभीरुकैर्मुनीन्द्रै-स्तन्मात्रा चिरपरिरक्षिते तदङ्गे ।त्यक्ताघे परिमथितादथोरुदण्डा-द्दोर्दण्डे परिमथिते त्वमाविरासीः ॥4॥
    tannāśāt khalajanabhīrukairmunīndrai-stanmātrā chiraparirakṣitē tadaṅgē ।tyaktāghē parimathitādathōrudaṇḍā-ddōrdaṇḍē parimathitē tvamāvirāsīḥ ॥4॥
    meaning

    At his destruction, the sages, fearing the reign of the wicked, long preserved the body of his mother; then, purified of sin, first from the thigh and then from the arm, Pṛthu was produced.

    विख्यातः पृथुरिति तापसोपदिष्टैःसूताद्यैः परिणुतभाविभूरिवीर्यः ।वेनार्त्या कबलितसम्पदं धरित्री-माक्रान्तां निजधनुषा समामकार्षीः ॥5॥
    vikhyātaḥ pṛthuriti tāpasōpadiṣṭaiḥsūtādyaiḥ pariṇutabhāvibhūrivīryaḥ ।vēnārtyā kabalitasampadaṃ dharitrī-mākrāntāṃ nijadhanuṣā samāmakārṣīḥ ॥5॥
    meaning

    The famous Pṛthu—instructed by the sages, praised by the bards and others for his great future heroism—levelled with his bow the earth that had been overcome and had swallowed the people's possessions.

    भूयस्तां निजकुलमुख्यवत्सयुक्त्यै-र्देवाद्यैः समुचितचारुभाजनेषु ।अन्नादीन्यभिलषितानि यानि तानिस्वच्छन्दं सुरभितनूमदूदुहस्त्वम् ॥6॥
    bhūyastāṃ nijakulamukhyavatsayuktyai-rdēvādyaiḥ samuchitachārubhājanēṣu ।annādīnyabhilaṣitāni yāni tānisvachChandaṃ surabhitanūmadūduhastvam ॥6॥
    meaning

    Then, to render the appropriate vessel for cows, gods, and others, Pṛthu milked out from Surabhi's body all desired foods, grains, and the like into fitting vessels.

    आत्मानं यजति मखैस्त्वयि त्रिधाम-न्नारब्धे शततमवाजिमेधयागे ।स्पर्धालुः शतमख एत्य नीचवेषोहृत्वाऽश्वं तव तनयात् पराजितोऽभूत् ॥7॥
    ātmānaṃ yajati makhaistvayi tridhāma-nnārabdhē śatatamavājimēdhayāgē ।spardhāluḥ śatamakha ētya nīchavēṣōhṛtvā'śvaṃ tava tanayāt parājitō'bhūt ॥7॥
    meaning

    When the hundredth horse-sacrifice was begun, Indra, jealous of you, came in a lowly disguise and stole the horse from Pṛthu's son—he was defeated by you.

    देवेन्द्रं मुहुरिति वाजिनं हरन्तंवह्नौ तं मुनिवरमण्डले जुहूषौ ।रुन्धाने कमलभवे क्रतोः समाप्तौसाक्षात्त्वं मधुरिपुमैक्षथाः स्वयं स्वम् ॥8॥
    dēvēndraṃ muhuriti vājinaṃ harantaṃvahnau taṃ munivaramaṇḍalē juhūṣau ।rundhānē kamalabhavē kratōḥ samāptausākṣāttvaṃ madhuripumaikṣathāḥ svayaṃ svam ॥8॥
    meaning

    As Brahmā was preparing to throw that horse-thieving Indra into the fire before the assembly of sages, at the very moment of the sacrifice's completion you personally reconciled them.

    तद्दत्तं वरमुपलभ्य भक्तिमेकांगङ्गान्ते विहितपदः कदापि देव ।सत्रस्थं मुनिनिवहं हितानि शंस-न्नैक्षिष्ठाः सनकमुखान् मुनीन् पुरस्तात् ॥9॥
    taddattaṃ varamupalabhya bhaktimēkāṃgaṅgāntē vihitapadaḥ kadāpi dēva ।satrasthaṃ muninivahaṃ hitāni śaṃsa-nnaikṣiṣṭhāḥ sanakamukhān munīn purastāt ॥9॥
    meaning

    Having obtained the boon of single-minded devotion from you, Pṛthu, once when his feet were set on the banks of the Gaṅgā, saw—while attending a session of sages—the Sanaka-muni and the others.

    Having received the vijñāna taught by Sanaka and others, he roamed the forest as a hermit in his own form as Pṛthu—O Lord of such great body, quickly pacify my diseases; O dweller of the wind-abode!
