If, having unyoked both (carts), one should perform the atithya rite, one would split the yajna. Without unyoking both, the atithya is performed just as for one not yet arrived. Of these, one is the unyoked draught-bull, the other unyoked too — and then is the atithya performed.

This is the connection of the yajna for unbrokenness. As many followers as the king arrives with — to all of them hospitality is shown; the metres indeed are the king's followers.

He thus does it (the offering): saying 'For Agni I take you, granter of wealth-prosperity; for Vishnu I take you' — by these he does it according to anushtup. 'For Shyena, the soma-bearer; for Vishnu I take you' — by these gayatri verses he does it.

He brought it; therefore by gayatri the atithya is done on both sides, before and behind. The atithya is, as it were, the head of the yajna; a nine-potsherd cake of purodasha is made for it.

Prana is threefold: he places prana, in due order, on the head of the yajna. Of Prajapati these are the eyelashes — when he uses horse-hair, ikshu-rod, or sideways arrows.

By doing this, they beat off the rakshasas. When the paridhi-sticks are of karshmarya wood, that is for the slaying of rakshasas. He touches them — for the non-going-down of rakshasas.

And these are Agni and Soma. How is the atithya done for Soma, not for Agni? — when, having churned fire on fire, he sets it forth, by that very act the atithya is done for Agni.

The gods and asuras were in conflict; the gods were mutually unfriendly; one quarrelled with another for seniority. They went apart five ways: Agni was firstborn, after them another

Then 'should one quarrel with another' — therefore one who quarrels first among the Tanunaptra-companions reaches harm. By this Tanunaptra rite they bound themselves together.

He wins it; he becomes possessed of cattle. At the deva-yajana taken by Nirrti, he should perform the rite for one for whom he wishes 'May I make Nirrti seize his yajna.' This is the Nirrti-taken deva-yajana.
