One who builds the fire-altar without regard for the proper deity is cut off from the gods and becomes more sinful; one who builds it with proper regard for the deity is not cut off and becomes more prosperous; the first layer is touched with the Āgneyī Gāyatrī.

One who builds the fire-altar having declared it to Prajāpati causes no harm; a black horse should stand to the north and a white horse to the south — both should be touched; these are the forms of Prajāpati.

The brick is of the form of night; when one intends to place the earth-filler, one should touch the white horse — that is the form of day; by placing it one builds the fire-altar with both day and night; a golden vessel full of honey is given — the honey-syllables.

O Agni, you the bull, the perceiving one — kindling you anew as a youth I approach you; may our household fires be without crossbeam-knots; sharpen us with keen sacred knowledge. Cattle are indeed those fire-altar bricks — one places the bull-brick.

One places that single brick — whatever food is prepared on the single-brick eighth-day altar, that alone is enclosed; this is indeed Prajāpati's wish-fulfilling cow — by her alone the sacrificer milks Agni in the other world, as the gods did.

When Agni is built up by which the gods went upward to the light — those are the plant bricks one places; for the completeness of the celestial world, for the hundred-weaponed, hundred-heroic, and hundred-refuge one — turn it toward the hostile ones.

All is given here; summer, winter, spring, autumn, the rainy season, all be welfare for us; may we be free from danger in the space of a hundred autumns of these seasons; and for the year, for the cycle-year, for the recurring year.

Enter gently, be pleasant to our child and our body; these are the unconquered deities — entering them he is not defeated; the theologians say: for those who build the fire-altar by half-months, months, seasons, and years.

You are Indra's thunderbolt, slayer of Vṛtra, our body-protector and spy; whoever threatens us from front, south, back, or north — may he strike against this stone. The gods and demons were in conflict — those body-protectors.

He places them before the gods come — those body-protectors he places around; Agnī and Viṣṇu with common intent — may these speech-powers increase with brilliant prizes; the theologians say: what libation is not poured to a deity.

One makes this oblation into a dwelling-bearer, filling whatever wish one pours it for; for this is Rudra, namely Agni — he has these two forms: the fearsome one and the auspicious one; when one pours the Śatarudrīya oblation, whichever fearsome form is his.

He who knows his foundation stands firmly upon it; if the clarified butter would be shed, one should cook a brahmin-rice-gruel and four brahmins should eat — for this Agni is the universal Agni; for a brahmin this is indeed Agni's dear.

He who desires it, to him is given this share — this is indeed the fire-ritual of Agni; at this time he is surely born when the whole fire is built; to the newborn one itself he also gives food; he, being pleased, nourishes him.

He who builds Agni thus knowing — he succeeds with the deity directly; O Agni the glorious, assign my glory to me; bring down the mist of Indrāvatī-worship; this is the head, the supreme ruler, brilliance-endowed, the highest glory among peers.

The visible Prajāpati, the supreme ruler, the sovereign one; the hymns, the meters, and the nīvids proclaim me — I bow to that sovereign state. Come together, approach me, let this ruler-lord be yours; his strength.

As a son born dies — so indeed he dies whose fire-altar's ukhya blaze rises up; if one makes it by friction one would split the hostile one from him; having rekindled it again — by that very womb.

Darkness and death are driven away; he gives gold — light is indeed gold; by light itself darkness is driven away; furthermore splendor is indeed gold; splendor alone is placed in the Self; golden Gharma — svāhā; golden Arka — svāhā.

The horse-sacrifice — when one pours those two oblations, the lights of Arka and the horse-sacrifice are joined; this is indeed the Arka-horse-sacrifice of the one in whose fire this is done; water was all this in the beginning — Prajāpati first.

The seers said to the sun 'come up to us'; they asked 'by what shall we come up to you?' — 'by the abundance' they said; they approached with two fire-altar layers; he became the five-layered fire-altar; one who builds Agni thus knowing.

Placed in the seasons — spring is his head, summer the right wing, the rains the tail, autumn the left wing, winter the middle; the first fortnights are the layers, the latter fortnights the earth-filler, the day-nights the bricks; this fire is the season-bird.

By god-going paths of the fulfilled and the generous — lead them to light. Move forward, go forward, O Agni — make the god-going paths; in this assembly, in this higher place, may all gods and the sacrificer.

May Agni, Viśvakarman's fire, place us among the gods in the celestial world. By which you carry a thousand, by which O Agni you carry all wealth — by that carry this sacrifice of ours to the celestial world among the gods.

What are your kindlings, O Agni, what your dwelling, what tongue, O Jātavedas, what your flame — what are your loves, O Agni, what your soma drops — with these build up the Self while knowing. A sacrifice from which Agni is cut off.

One says 'the dwelling' — this is indeed Agni's own fire-altar; Agni alone builds Agni; the adhvaryu does not enter between the Self; may the fires go out in four directions — let him lead our sacrifice knowingly; anointing with clarified butter.

By this he knows the directions; 'lead our sacrifice knowingly' he says — for the attainment of the celestial world; Brahman becomes the kindling of the oblations; the gods by Brahman reached the celestial world — what.

I take up fire first for the increase of wealth, for good progeny, for heroic strength; may I place progeny in myself, may I place splendor in myself; may we be unharmed in body, with heroes. O Agni, our father, who dwells in the heart, an immortal among mortals.

He builds Agni for the sacrificer; the cattle indeed do not stand by the one building Agni — the cattle would leave him; 'I take up fire first' he says — he places his own fire in the Self; the cattle do not leave him; the Brahman.

Water is indeed all the deities; by the deities he creates with him what he builds with clay; for this is the universal Agni — by Agni alone he builds Agni; the theologians say: one who builds with both clay and water.

He builds with clay; therefore it is called fire; he places the golden brick — light is indeed gold; light is placed in him; furthermore splendor is gold; splendor alone is placed in the Self; one who builds Agni facing all directions.
