The gods and asuras were arrayed against each other — the gods, seeking victory, placed their precious wealth in the fire; they said 'if we conquer it will be ours, if we are conquered it will go to the enemy' — thus Agni received the first wealth.

Silver gold was produced from tears — from that production golden silver is ineligible as dakshina; whoever gives it as dakshina before a year passes, for that person the years are cut short.

So the one who knows this kinship becomes endowed with kinship — Agni when installed desires progeny and cattle; the installed sacrificer desires progeny, cattle, and good fortune.

He who drives away the sacrifice by extinguishing the fire loses the cattle and progeny — the five-cup purodasha is the five-verse pankti verse; the pankti-metre is the sacrifice; pankti animals are the cattle.

It becomes one hundred syllables — a human lives a hundred years; it stands firm in the life-power and the sense-power; if the installed fire fails to grow it will not generate progeny.

He divides it equally — by brahman he does so; he sacrifices quietly; just as he who has found wealth hides it, so he keeps the fire-sacrifice to the purified soma; he prays to the well-sacrificed fire.

He offers; thus the sacrificer grasps the animals on both sides; it is said — if he has not yet completed the formulas, the materials have not been collected, these ritual words have not been mastered.

Thus he prevents him — the one who extinguishes the fire is the destroyer of heroes of the gods; the fire in his place is Varuna's; therefore one performs the Agni-Varuna eleven-cup offering at the re-installation.

The earth by breadth, the sky by expanse, the intermediate space by greatness — in your lap, O divine Aditi, I place the fire as the eater of food, for the eating of food.

Earth by breadth, sky by expanse — he says this as a blessing; thus he installs it; snakes when old think they are renewed — a person performs a snake rite; by this the re-installation proceeds.

He recites the mantras for the re-installation — the proper words of consecration return the fire to its sanctified state and release the sacrificer from the impurity of the fire's going out.

He performs the svishtakrit oblation at the re-installation — the svishtakrit is Agni's own offering; by offering to Agni at the re-installation Agni is honoured for receiving his fire back.
