Verse 1: Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss — who is truth, knowledge, infinite, and eternal; who is the transcendent sky but also plays rolling effortlessly in the cowherd courtyard; whose many forms are fashioned by Maya yet who is formless, taking the shape of the universe; who is the lord and protector of the earth, yet himself without a lord.

Verse 2: Bow to Govinda, the lord, the supreme bliss — who, when Yashoda said 'You ate mud!', showed childlike fear at her scolding; and when she opened his mouth, revealed in it the row of all fourteen worlds — both the illumined and the dark; who is the primordial pillar of the three-world city, both beyond and within all light.

Verse 3: Bow to Govinda, the solely peaceful one, the supreme bliss — who slays the heroes of the gods' enemies, removes the burden of the earth, and cures the disease of worldly existence; who is liberation itself, who eats butter (as the child-god) yet has no need to eat, being the sustenance of all worlds; whose wisdom manifests in clear pure consciousness, yet is the unmanifest.

Verse 4: Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss — the cowherd who is the Lord's playful form, the cowherd of the noble lineage; who is endearingly tended to in the game of Govardhana-lifting with the Gopi women; whose clearly pronounced name 'Govinda' was given by the cows, who has many names yet is beyond the range of the Gopi's senses.

Verse 5: Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss — who is differentiated within the circle of Gopi groups yet appears as both separated and non-separated; whose blessed form is ever dusty from the cows' hooves; who is grasped in the bliss of faith and devotion, who is unthinkable yet truly felt; who is like a Chintamani gem in his glory.

Verse 6: Bow to Govinda, the pure being, the supreme bliss — who took the garments of the distressed women bathing, climbed a tree (to watch), and called them toward him to receive their clothes, who requires them to stand unclothed to retrieve them; who is free from the dual grief and delusion, the Awakened One dwelling within the intellect.

Verse 7: Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss — the beloved, the cause of all causes, the first without beginning, shining like a dark cloud; who dances again and again on the hood of Kaliya in the Yamuna; who is Time, yet beyond time and all arts; who pervades all, and destroys the sins of the Kali Age; the motive behind the movements of all three times.

Verse 8: Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss — who is worshipped by the multitude of divine beings on the earth of Vrindavana; of moonlike pure gentle smile like the kunda flower, the bliss of his companions; whose pair of blissful feet are worthy of worship by all great sages; the ocean of all worthy qualities.

Phala-shruti: Whoever studies this Govindashtakam with the mind offered to Govinda, chanting 'Govinda, Achyuta, Madhava, Vishnu, Gokulanayaka, Krishna' — his sins all washed by the nectar-flood of meditation on Govinda's lotus feet — attains Govinda, the innermost Supreme Bliss.
