- verse 1॥ तृतीयः सर्गः ॥॥ मुग्धमधुसूदनः ॥॥ tṛtīyaḥ sargaḥ ॥॥ mugdhamadhusūdanaḥ ॥meaning
Section heading: The Third Canto — 'Mugdha Madhusudana' (Madhusudana who is bewitchingly lovely, the Krishna who slew the demon Madhu).

Even Krishna, the slayer of Kamsa, who had placed Radha in his heart, abandoned the other cowherd women and searched for her — overcome by longing.

Following Radha, his heart wounded by the arrows of Kama, Krishna felt remorse and, sitting alone under a Kadamba tree, lamented his behaviour.

She left when she saw me surrounded by other women; because of my guilt I did not stop her — for this I am tormented with regret.

What will she do now? What will she say? How long will she suffer in this separation? What is the use of wealth, of companions, of my very life without her?

I remember her face — brows arched in anger, eyebrows bent like a bow, cheeks flushing, like a red lotus agitated above by a circling bee.
- verse 8तामहं हृदि सङ्गतामनिशं भृशं रमयामि ।किं वनेऽनुसरामि तामिह किं वृथा विलपामि ॥ 4 ॥tāmahaṃ hṛdi saṅgatāmaniśaṃ bhṛśaṃ ramayāmi ।kiṃ vanē'nusarāmi tāmiha kiṃ vṛthā vilapāmi ॥ 4 ॥meaning
I hold her in my heart at every moment, embracing her in bliss — then why do I pursue her in the forest? Why this futile wandering?
- verse 9तन्वि खिन्नमसूयया हृदयं तवाकलयामि ।तन्न वेद्मि कुतो गतासि न तेन तेऽनुनयामि ॥ 5 ॥tanvi khinnamasūyayā hṛdayaṃ tavākalayāmi ।tanna vēdmi kutō gatāsi na tēna tē'nunayāmi ॥ 5 ॥meaning
O slender one, I can see your heart burning with jealousy; yet I do not know where you have gone — and neither your hurt nor mine can be healed without meeting.

You appear and disappear before me like an apparition; come again as before with eager joy and embrace me — will you not show yourself once more?
- verse 11क्षम्यतामपरं कदापि तवेदृशं न करोमि ।देहि सुन्दरि दर्शनं मम मन्मथेन दुनोमि ॥ 7 ॥kṣamyatāmaparaṃ kadāpi tavēdṛśaṃ na karōmi ।dēhi sundari darśanaṃ mama manmathēna dunōmi ॥ 7 ॥meaning
Forgive me this once; never again shall I act in such a way; O beautiful one, grant me your vision — for I am tortured by the god of love.

Jayadeva, born in the village by the sea, red as the moon, sings this song of Krishna's remorse — let it be recited by the devoted.
- verse 13हृदि बिसलताहारो नायं भुजङ्गमनायकः कुवलयदलश्रेणी कण्ठे न सा गरलद्युतिः ।मलयजरजो नेदं भस्म प्रियारहिते मयि प्रहर न हरभ्रान्त्यानङ्ग क्रुधा किमु धावसि ॥ 20 ॥hṛdi bisalatāhārō nāyaṃ bhujaṅgamanāyakaḥ kuvalayadalaśrēṇī kaṇṭhē na sā garaladyutiḥ ।malayajarajō nēdaṃ bhasma priyārahitē mayi prahara na harabhrāntyānaṅga krudhā kimu dhāvasi ॥ 20 ॥meaning
The lotus-fibre garland on his chest is not a serpent; the circle of blue lily petals at his throat is not poison — yet Radha's absence makes everything feel like death.

O Radha, do not string Kama's bow of the mango blossom against me; do not shoot the arrow of your glance — for you who have conquered the world with play have already defeated me.
- verse 15भ्रूचापे निहितः कटाक्षविशिखो निर्मातु मर्मव्यथां श्यामात्मा कुटिलः करोतु कबरीभारोऽपि मारोद्यमम् ।मोहं तावदयं च तन्वि तनुतां बिम्बादरो रागवान् सद्वृत्तस्तनमण्दलस्तव कथं प्राणैर्मम क्रीडति ॥ 22 ॥bhrūchāpē nihitaḥ kaṭākṣaviśikhō nirmātu marmavyathāṃ śyāmātmā kuṭilaḥ karōtu kabarībhārō'pi mārōdyamam ।mōhaṃ tāvadayaṃ cha tanvi tanutāṃ bimbādarō rāgavān sadvṛttastanamaṇdalastava kathaṃ prāṇairmama krīḍati ॥ 22 ॥meaning
Your arched eyebrow is the bow; the arrow is the glance; the bowstring is your ear-ornament — let the dark-hued crooked one fashion only the pain of the heart.
- verse 16तानि स्पर्शसुखानि ते च तरलाः स्निग्धा दृशोर्विभ्रमा-स्तद्वक्त्राम्बुजसौरभं स च सुधास्यन्दी गिरां वक्रिमा ।सा बिम्बाधरमाधुरीति विषयासङ्गेऽपि चेन्मानसं तस्यां लग्नसमाधि हन्त विरहव्याधिः कथं वर्धते ॥ 23 ॥tāni sparśasukhāni tē cha taralāḥ snigdhā dṛśōrvibhramā-stadvaktrāmbujasaurabhaṃ sa cha sudhāsyandī girāṃ vakrimā ।sā bimbādharamādhurīti viṣayāsaṅgē'pi chēnmānasaṃ tasyāṃ lagnasamādhi hanta virahavyādhiḥ kathaṃ vardhatē ॥ 23 ॥meaning
Those delights of your touch, the roving tender glances of your loving eyes, the fragrance of your lotus-face, those soft lips — I remember all of them now in this separation.
- verse 17भ्रूपल्लवं धनुरपाङ्गतरङ्गितानि बाणाः गुणः श्रवणपालिरिति स्मरेण ।तस्यामनङ्गजयजङ्गमदेवतायां अस्त्राणि निर्जितजगन्ति किमर्पितानि ॥ 24 ॥bhrūpallavaṃ dhanurapāṅgataraṅgitāni bāṇāḥ guṇaḥ śravaṇapāliriti smarēṇa ।tasyāmanaṅgajayajaṅgamadēvatāyāṃ astrāṇi nirjitajaganti kimarpitāni ॥ 24 ॥meaning
Your brow is the budding leaf-bow; the arrows are the waves of your sidelong glance; the bowstring is your earring — thus Kama is armed with your beauty.

With his neck tilting, his crest unsteady, his flute note shining in the place of concentrated gaze — Krishna himself is pierced by the arrow of Radha's memory.
