When the demon Chanda was slain and Munda had fallen, and the vast army was destroyed, the lord of asuras Shumbha burned with rage.

Then Shumbha, that mighty and wrathful one, his mind seized by anger, ordered the full mobilization of all the demon armies.

'Let all the demon forces sally forth now, armed, the eighty-six clans of Kambu and the eighty-four clans together with their own forces.'

'Let the fifty clans of Kotivirya, O demons, and the hundred clans of Dhaumra go forth by my command.'

'Let the Kalakas, Daurhrdas, Maurvas, and Kalikeyas, those demons, go forth quickly to battle, armed and ready at my command.'

Having thus commanded, Shumbha the lord of asuras, that fearsome ruler, marched out with many thousands of great armies.

Chandika, seeing that most terrible army approaching, filled the space between earth and sky with the twanging of her bowstring.

Her lion roared with a mighty sound, and Ambika amplified that roar with the clanging of her bell.

With the fearsome sounds of bowstring and lion and bell, Kali opened her cavernous mouth wide and drowned all directions.

Hearing that sound, the demon armies came from all four sides and surrounded the Goddess, the lion, and Kali in fury.

The divine Shaktis of Brahma, Ishana, Guha, Vishnu, and Indra emerged from the bodies of those gods in forms like their own and came to Chandika for the destruction of the gods' enemies.

Whatever form and ornaments and vehicle a god possessed, the Shakti of that god appeared in precisely that form to fight the asuras.

Brahma's Shakti, called Brahmani, came forward riding a swan-chariot, bearing a rosary and water-pot.

Maheshvari arrived riding on a bull, bearing a trident, adorned by great serpents, shining with the crescent moon.

Kaumari, the Shakti resembling Guha, bearing a spear, riding on a peacock, came forward to fight the demons in the form of Ambika.

Likewise the Vaishnavi Shakti, seated upon Garuda, came bearing conch, discus, mace, bow, and sword.

The Shakti of Hari in his incomparable boar form also came there in the form of Varahi.
- verse 21यज्ञवाराहमतुलं रूपं या भिभ्रतो हरेः ।शक्तिः साप्याययौ तत्र वाराहीं बिभ्रती तनुम् ॥19॥yajñavārāhamatulaṃ rūpaṃ yā bhibhratō harēḥ ।śaktiḥ sāpyāyayau tatra vārāhīṃ bibhratī tanum ॥19॥meaning
Narasimhi, bearing a form like that of Narasimha, also arrived there, tossing galaxies of stars with the shaking of her mane.

Aindri, bearing a thunderbolt, arrived mounted on the king of elephants, with a thousand eyes, just as Indra himself appears.

Then Shiva, surrounded by all those divine Shaktis, said to Chandika: 'Let the asuras be slain swiftly for my satisfaction.'

Then from Chandika's own body emerged a most fearsome Shakti, utterly fierce, howling like a hundred jackals — Chandika's own power.

She, the invincible one, said to Shiva of the matted grey locks: 'Go as my messenger to Shumbha and Nishumbha.'

'Tell those two arrogant demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and whatever other demons are assembled there ready for battle:'
- verse 27ब्रूहि शुम्भं निशुम्भं च दानवावतिगर्वितौ ।ये चान्ये दानवास्तत्र युद्धाय समुपस्थिताः ॥25॥brūhi śumbhaṃ niśumbhaṃ cha dānavāvatigarvitau ।yē chānyē dānavāstatra yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ ॥25॥meaning
'Let Indra have the three worlds; let the gods enjoy the oblations; you all go down to Patala if you wish to live.'
- verse 28त्रैलोक्यमिन्द्रो लभतां देवाः सन्तु हविर्भुजः ।यूयं प्रयात पातालं यदि जीवितुमिच्छथ ॥26॥trailōkyamindrō labhatāṃ dēvāḥ santu havirbhujaḥ ।yūyaṃ prayāta pātāḻaṃ yadi jīvitumichChatha ॥26॥meaning
'But if through pride of strength you desire battle, then come — let my jackals be well-fed with your flesh.'
- verse 29बलावलेपादथ चेद्भवन्तो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः ।तदा गच्छत तृप्यन्तु मच्छिवाः पिशितेन वः ॥27॥balāvalēpādatha chēdbhavantō yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ।tadā gachChata tṛpyantu machChivāḥ piśitēna vaḥ ॥27॥meaning
Because Shiva himself was dispatched as her messenger, she became known in this world as Shivaduti.

Those great demons, hearing the words proclaimed by Shiva as her envoy, filled with rage, went to where Katyayani stood.

Then first of all in the van the demon enemies rained down arrows, spears, and javelins upon her in full fury.

She playfully severed all those shot arrows, tridents, spears, and axes with great shafts released from her thundering bow.

And before her Kali moved through battle, splitting demons with thrusts of her trident and smashing them with her skull-staff.

Brahmani rendered the enemies powerless and dull wherever she went, by sprinkling them with water from her vessel.

Maheshvari slew demons with her trident, Vaishnavi with her discus, Kaumari with her spear in utmost fury.

Aindri with her thunderbolt — hundreds of demons and danavas fell to the ground, streams of blood flowing from their bodies.

As the Matrika host in fury pounded the great demons, the armies of the gods' enemies were routed by various means.

Seeing the demon armies being destroyed by the Matrika host, the great demon Raktabija came forth in fury to give battle.

When a drop of Raktabija's blood fell to the earth a great demon of equal size and power instantly arose from that spot.

That great demon fought Aindri with a mace; then Aindri struck Raktabija with her own thunderbolt.

Wounded by the thunderbolt, blood flowed freely from him; from every drop warriors arose of his own form and valour.

From the wounds made by Vaishnavi's discus, the blood that flowed produced thousands of demons who filled the world.

That demon, maddened with rage, struck all the Matrikas in turn with his mace.

From the many wounds the Matrikas dealt him, everywhere blood poured to the earth and thousands of demons arose.

With those blood-born demons all the world was filled; the gods were seized with great fear.

'Swiftly receive with that gaping mouth the drops of blood falling from my weapons as they strike this great demon.'

'Devouring the great demons born from those drops as you range through battle — thus this demon shall diminish as his blood is consumed.'
- verse 57भक्षयन्ती चर रणो तदुत्पन्नान्महासुरान् ।एवमेष क्षयं दैत्यः क्षेण रक्तो गमिष्यति ॥55॥bhakṣayantī chara raṇō tadutpannānmahāsurān ।ēvamēṣa kṣayaṃ daityaḥ kṣēṇa raktō gamiṣyati ॥55॥meaning
'Those you devour will not arise again as others.' So saying, the Goddess struck him with her trident.

Kali swallowed all the blood of Raktabija; then the demon struck Chandika there with a mace.

But the mace-blow caused the Goddess not the slightest pain; and from his wounded body blood continued to gush.

Wherever it fell Chamunda caught it all in her mouth; from whatever blood-drops arose in her mouth she consumed those demons too.

Chamunda consumed all and drank his blood.

The Goddess struck Raktabija — already drained of blood — with spear, thunderbolt, arrows, sword, and lances while Chamunda drank his blood.

Then the great demon, struck by the host of weapons, drained of all blood, fell to the ground, O king.
