[Ritual rubric] Invocation of the uttara-carita: the seer is Rudra, the deity is Mahāsarasvatī, the metre is anuṣṭup, the power is Bhīmā, the seed is Bhrāmarī, the element is the sun, the form is the Sāmaveda—recited for pleasing Mahāsarasvatī.

[Dhyāna verse] I worship Sarasvatī, who was born from the body of Gaurī, who holds bell, trident, plough, conch, pestle, discus, bow, and arrow in her lotus hands, who is radiant as the moon gleaming through heavy clouds, who is the foundation of the three worlds, and who torments demons like Śumbha.

Shumbha said: You woman, do not boast too much; the hosts of asuras still stand undefeated before you.

Long ago, the two demons Śumbha and Niśumbha, intoxicated by pride and power, seized from Indra all three worlds and all shares of the sacrifice.
- verse 6तावेव सूर्यतां तद्वदधिकारं तथैन्दवंकौबेरमथ याम्यं चक्रान्ते वरुणस्य चतावेव पवनर्द्धिऽं च चक्रतुर्वह्नि कर्मचततो देवा विनिर्धूता भ्रष्टराज्याः पराजिताः ॥3॥tāvēva sūryatāṃ tadvadadhikāraṃ tathaindavaṃkaubēramatha yāmyaṃ chakrāntē varuṇasya chatāvēva pavanarddhi'ṃ cha chakraturvahni karmachatatō dēvā vinirdhūtā bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ ॥3॥meaning
Those two appropriated the authority of the sun and moon, of Kubera, Yama, and Varuṇa; they performed the functions of Wind and Fire; stripped of their kingdoms, all the gods were routed and humiliated.

All the thirty gods, their authority stolen and utterly rejected by those two great demons, remembered the unconquered Goddess.

She had given us this boon: 'In times of calamity, when you all remember me, I will immediately destroy your supreme dangers.'

With this resolve, the gods went to the mountain Himavat, the lord of mountains, and there praised the Goddess, the Māyā of Viṣṇu.

Kali spread her vast mouth and swallowed the blood of Raktabija before it could reach the earth, preventing new demons from arising.

Salutations to the Goddess, to the Mahādevi, always salutations to the auspicious one; salutations to the gracious Prakṛti—we bow in complete prostration.

Salutations to the fierce, to the eternal; salutations again and again to Gaurī and Dhātrī; salutations constantly to Jyotsnā, to her who is in the form of the moon, to the blissful.

We bow to the auspicious, the prosperous; salutations again and again to Siddhi; salutations to Nairṛtī and to Lakṣmī of the earth-mountains, and to Śarvāṇī.

Salutations constantly to Durgā, to the one who crosses beyond difficulties, to the essential, to the universal-doer; salutations to Khyāti, and likewise to Kṛṣṇā, and to Dhūmrā.

She who is the ruler of the senses and presides over all beings—to that all-pervading Goddess, salutations again and again.

She who pervades the entire universe in the form of pure consciousness—salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, again and again.

Praised formerly by the gods who sought refuge, and served daily by the lord of the gods—may that auspicious Goddess Īśvarī, the cause of good, destroy calamities and bestow welfare.
- verse 40या साम्प्रतं चोद्धतदैत्यतापितैरस्माभिरीशाचसुरैर्नमश्यते।याच स्मता तत्क्षण मेव हन्ति नःसर्वा पदोभक्तिविनम्रमूर्तिभिः ॥36॥yā sāmprataṃ chōddhatadaityatāpitairasmābhirīśāchasurairnamaśyatē।yācha smatā tatkṣaṇa mēva hanti naḥsarvā padōbhaktivinamramūrtibhiḥ ॥36॥meaning
She who is now worshipped by us and by the gods afflicted by the violent demons, and who, when remembered even for an instant, destroys all our calamities—we bow with bodies bent in devotion.

[Devi speaks] At the time of the great dissolution I will become the mother of the universe and protect it.
- verse 42एवं स्तवाभि युक्तानां देवानां तत्र पार्वती।स्नातुमभ्याययौ तोये जाह्नव्या नृपनन्दन ॥37॥ēvaṃ stavābhi yuktānāṃ dēvānāṃ tatra pārvatī।snātumabhyāyayau tōyē jāhnavyā nṛpanandana ॥37॥meaning
O heir of a king, while the gods were thus engaged in praise, Pārvatī came there to bathe in the waters of the Jāhnavī.
- verse 43साब्रवीत्तान् सुरान् सुभ्रूर्भवद्भिः स्तूयतेऽत्र काशरीरकोशतश्चास्याः समुद्भूताऽ ब्रवीच्छिवा ॥38॥sābravīttān surān subhrūrbhavadbhiḥ stūyatē'tra kāśarīrakōśataśchāsyāḥ samudbhūtā' bravīchChivā ॥38॥meaning
That beautiful-browed Pārvatī asked the gods: 'Whom do you praise here?' Thereupon Śivā, who had emerged from Pārvatī's body-sheath, spoke.

Śivā said: 'This praise is being offered to me by the gods who were rejected by the demon Śumbha and defeated in battle by Niśumbha.'

The Ambikā who emerged from Pārvatī's body-sheath is therefore celebrated in all worlds as Kauśikī.
- verse 46तस्यांविनिर्गतायां तु कृष्णाभूत्सापि पार्वती।कालिकेति समाख्याता हिमाचलकृताश्रया ॥41॥tasyāṃvinirgatāyāṃ tu kṛṣṇābhūtsāpi pārvatī।kāḻikēti samākhyātā himāchalakṛtāśrayā ॥41॥meaning
After she departed, Pārvatī herself became dark; she became known as Kālikā and took her abode on the Himālayas.

Then Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, servants of Śumbha and Niśumbha, saw Ambikā bearing a supremely beautiful, most captivating form.

They described her to Śumbha as being exceedingly beautiful: 'O great king, some woman dwells there, illuminating the Himālayas.'

Such a surpassingly beautiful form has never been seen anywhere by anyone; O lord of demons, find out who she is and take her.

She is a jewel among women, with exquisite limbs, illuminating the directions with her radiance; she stands there, O lord of demons—you should behold her.

Whatever jewels, gems, elephants, horses, and other treasures exist in the three worlds—all of them now shine in your house.

This aerial vehicle yoked with swans stands in your courtyard; this gem of a thing was brought here from Brahmā—it was wondrous.

O lord, the power named Utkrāntidā was stolen from Death by you; the noose of the lord of waters is in your brother's possession.

All the gems born of the ocean belong to Niśumbha; fire also gave you two fire-purified garments.

Hearing those words of Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, Śumbha sent the great demon Sugrīva as messenger to the Goddess.

Sugrīva was told: 'Go and address her thus, and convey my message—do quickly whatever will make her come willingly.'

O Goddess, Śumbha, the lord of demons, is the supreme lord of the three worlds; sent by him, I am his messenger, come to your presence.

By coming under my protection you will obtain unparalleled supreme sovereignty; reflect on this wisely and come to me.

The merchant Samadhi also listened and was instructed to worship the Goddess; he too will attain liberation in a future birth.

Having heard those words, the Goddess Durgā, the blessed and gracious one who upholds the world, laughed deep within and spoke.

Whoever gives food and shelter to those who recite this stotra will be protected by the Goddess in all ways.

What you say is true; you have spoken no falsehood at all; Śumbha is the lord of three worlds, and Niśumbha is likewise.

But what can I do? This vow was made by me in my foolishness of old—hear what vow was made long ago.
- verse 78योमां जयति सज्ग्रामे यो मे दर्पं व्यपोहति।योमे प्रतिबलो लोके स मे भर्ता भविष्यति ॥69॥yōmāṃ jayati sajgrāmē yō mē darpaṃ vyapōhati।yōmē pratibalō lōkē sa mē bhartā bhaviṣyati ॥69॥meaning
He who conquers me in battle, who removes my pride, who is my equal in strength in this world—he shall be my husband.

[Phalashruti] One who recites this receives all the fruits of pilgrimage, sacrifice, austerity, and charitable giving.

You are arrogant; speak not thus before me, O Goddess—what single man can stand before Śumbha and Niśumbha in all three worlds?

All the gods themselves do not stand in battle before the other demons either; O Goddess, you are but one woman alone.

Indra and all the gods could not stand in battle against Śumbha—how then will you, a woman, face them?

Go, I tell you—go willingly to Śumbha and Niśumbha, lest you go to them dragged by the hair, your dignity stripped away.

Go back; all that I have said to you is well considered; tell the lord of the gods, and let him do what is appropriate.
