    When that demon of great valor and the army of the enemy of the gods were slain by the goddess, Indra and the other gods bowed low, their necks bent in reverence, and praised her in joy with bodies thrilling with delight.

    She by whose power this world is pervaded, who is the collective form of the power of all the hosts of gods — Ambika, worshipped by all gods and great sages — we bow to her in devotion; may she bestow auspiciousness.

    Whose immeasurable might and power even the infinite Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva are unable to describe — may that Chandika direct her thought to the protection of the whole world and the destruction of inauspicious fear.

    She who of herself is Lakshmi in the homes of the virtuous and Alakshmi in the homes of the wicked, intelligence in the minds of the wise, faith among the good of noble birth, and shame — we bow to her; O Goddess, protect the world.

    kiṃ varṇayāma tavarūpa machintyamētatkiñchātivīryamasurakṣayakāri bhūrikiṃ chāhavēṣu charitāni tavātbhutānisarvēṣu dēvyasuradēvagaṇādikēṣu । ॥6

    How shall we describe your form which is beyond thought? What of your excessive valor which destroys demons? What of your wonderful deeds in battle among all the gods, demons, and their hosts?

    You are the cause of the maintenance of the entire world, though yourself of the three gunas and free from fault, not known by Hari, Hara and others — you are the primal Prakriti, the supreme, the unmanifest.

    By whose constant utterance all the gods are satisfied in all sacrifices — you are indeed Svaha; you are Svadha, the means of satisfaction to the ancestors; and so people utter you as such.

    You are Medha, O Goddess, knowing the essence of all scriptures; you are Durga, the boat crossing the difficult ocean of existence; you are Shri dwelling in the heart of Kaitabha's enemy; you are indeed Gauri established by the moon-crested one.

    That face of yours — slightly smiling, pure, full as the complete moon, radiant as the finest gold, utterly wonderful — was yet looked at suddenly by Mahishasura even as you grew furious.

    dṛṣṭvātu dēvi kupitaṃ bhrukuṭīkarāḻamudyachChaśāṅkasadṛśachChavi yanna sadyaḥprāṇān mumōcha mahiṣastadatīva chitraṃkairjīvyatē hi kupitāntakadarśanēna । ॥13

    But when the goddess saw that terrible face distorted with the threatening-brow frown — it was passing strange that Mahisha did not immediately give up his life at the sight of the death-god in anger.

    O Goddess, be gracious — you are the supreme being; the world is your creation; you instantly destroy the wicked in your anger, as was shown just now when Mahishasura's great army was brought to an end.

    Those are blessed, those are truly fortunate, whose wealth, fame, and righteousness do not waste away — those whose wives, sons, servants, and family are always sheltered by you in your grace.

    O Goddess, the virtuous man who daily performs the rites of dharma with due care and devotion proceeds to heaven through your grace; indeed, O Goddess, you thus bestow fruit in all three worlds.

    O Durga, when remembered you remove the fear of all beings; when remembered by the healthy-minded you bestow a mind of surpassing virtue — O remover of poverty, suffering, and fear — who else but you always turns a compassionate heart to universal benefit?

    Knowing that 'the world attains happiness by the death of these' and 'let these enemies who have committed sins go to heaven through death in battle' — thus thinking compassionately even about enemies, you slay them, O Goddess.

    Why does the Goddess not instantly reduce all the demons to ash? She sends weapons against them so that purified by the sword they may proceed to heaven — such is her compassion.

    O Goddess, your nature is to suppress the ways of the wicked; your form is beyond thought and incomparable; your valor destroys those who steal the gods' power; yet you show compassion even to enemies.

    By what shall your valor be compared? Where on earth is such beauty that terrifies enemies? Compassion in the heart and fierceness in battle — these are found in you alone, O Goddess, in all the three worlds.

    All these three worlds have been saved by you through the slaying of the enemy — and those enemy hosts slain in battle have attained heaven; even fear has been dispelled; salutation to you, O Goddess!
