Dhyana verse: She who blazes like lightning, who rides on the lord of beasts, who is terrible, attended by maidens holding sword and shield, with hands bearing discus, mace, sword, shield —

The goddess spoke: 1.
- verse 4एभिः स्तवैश्च मा नित्यं स्तोष्यते यः समाहितः।तस्याहं सकलां बाधां नाशयिष्याम्य संशयम् ॥2॥ēbhiḥ stavaiścha mā nityaṃ stōṣyatē yaḥ samāhitaḥ।tasyāhaṃ sakalāṃ bādhāṃ nāśayiṣyāmya saṃśayam ॥2॥meaning
'Whoever regularly and with concentrated mind praises Me with these hymns — for him I shall destroy all obstacles, without doubt.'
- verse 5मधुकैटभनाशं च महिषासुरघातनम्।कीर्तियिष्यन्ति ये त द्वद्वधं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥3॥madhukaiṭabhanāśaṃ cha mahiṣāsuraghātanam।kīrtiyiṣyanti yē ta dvadvadhaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayōḥ ॥3॥meaning
'Those who recite the destruction of Madhu and Kaitabha, the slaying of Mahishasura, and the killing of Shumbha and Nishumbha —'
- verse 6अष्टम्यां च चतुर्धश्यां नवम्यां चैकचेतसः।श्रोष्यन्ति चैव ये भक्त्या मम माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥4॥aṣṭamyāṃ cha chaturdhaśyāṃ navamyāṃ chaikachētasaḥ।śrōṣyanti chaiva yē bhaktyā mama māhātmyamuttamam ॥4॥meaning
'And those who with devotion hear this supreme glorification of My greatness on the eighth, fourteenth, and ninth lunar days with focused mind —'
- verse 7न तेषां दुष्कृतं किञ्चिद् दुष्कृतोत्था न चापदः।भविष्यति न दारिद्र्यं न चै वेष्टवियोजनम् ॥5॥na tēṣāṃ duṣkṛtaṃ kiñchid duṣkṛtōtthā na chāpadaḥ।bhaviṣyati na dāridryaṃ na chai vēṣṭaviyōjanam ॥5॥meaning
'For them no evil deed, no calamity born of evil deeds shall arise; there shall be no poverty and no separation from loved ones.'
- verse 8शत्रुभ्यो न भयं तस्य दस्युतो वा न राजतः।न शस्त्रानलतो यौघात् कदाचित् सम्भविष्यति ॥6॥śatrubhyō na bhayaṃ tasya dasyutō vā na rājataḥ।na śastrānalatō yaughāt kadāchit sambhaviṣyati ॥6॥meaning
'There shall be no fear from enemies, nor from robbers, nor from the king; never shall danger arise from weapons, fire, or floods.'
- verse 9तस्मान्ममैतन्माहत्म्यं पठितव्यं समाहितैः।श्रोतव्यं च सदा भक्त्या परं स्वस्त्ययनं हि तत् ॥7॥tasmānmamaitanmāhatmyaṃ paṭhitavyaṃ samāhitaiḥ।śrōtavyaṃ cha sadā bhaktyā paraṃ svastyayanaṃ hi tat ॥7॥meaning
'Therefore this glorification of Mine is to be recited with concentrated mind by the devout; it is always to be heard with devotion — it is the supreme purification.'
- verse 10उप सर्गान शेषांस्तु महामारी समुद्भवान्।तथा त्रिविध मुत्पातं माहात्म्यं शमयेन्मम ॥8॥यत्रैत त्पठ्यते सम्यङ्नित्यमायतने मम।सदा न तद्विमोक्ष्यामि सान्निध्यं तत्र मेस्थितम् ॥9॥upa sargāna śēṣāṃstu mahāmārī samudbhavān।tathā trividha mutpātaṃ māhātmyaṃ śamayēnmama ॥8॥yatraita tpaṭhyatē samyaṅnityamāyatanē mama।sadā na tadvimōkṣyāmi sānnidhyaṃ tatra mēsthitam ॥9॥meaning
'This glorification of Mine dispels all troubles, great epidemics, and the three kinds of portents; where it is properly and regularly recited in my temple, that place I never abandon.'
- verse 11बलि प्रदाने पूजायामग्नि कार्ये महोत्सवे।सर्वं ममैतन्माहात्म्यं उच्चार्यं श्राव्यमेवच ॥10॥bali pradānē pūjāyāmagni kāryē mahōtsavē।sarvaṃ mamaitanmāhātmyaṃ uchchāryaṃ śrāvyamēvacha ॥10॥meaning
'During the offering of oblations, worship, fire ceremonies, and great festivals — this entire glorification of Mine is to be recited and heard.'
- verse 12जानताजानता वापि बलि पूजां तथा कृताम्।प्रतीक्षिष्याम्यहं प्रीत्या वह्नि होमं तथा कृतम् ॥11॥jānatājānatā vāpi bali pūjāṃ tathā kṛtām।pratīkṣiṣyāmyahaṃ prītyā vahni hōmaṃ tathā kṛtam ॥11॥meaning
'Whether by one who knows or one who does not know, offerings and worship thus made I shall accept with joy, as also fire oblations thus performed.'

'During the great annual autumn worship, whoever hears with devotion this glorification of Mine —'
- verse 14सर्वबाधाविनिर्मुक्तो धनधान्यसमन्वितः।मनुष्यो मत्प्रसादेन भविष्यति न संशयः॥13॥sarvabādhāvinirmuktō dhanadhānyasamanvitaḥ।manuṣyō matprasādēna bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ॥13॥meaning
'— that person shall be freed from all afflictions and endowed with wealth and grain by My grace, without doubt.'

'Having heard this glorification of Mine and these auspicious accounts of My manifestations, a man becomes fearless in battle.'

'Enemies are destroyed, prosperity is attained, the family of those who hear My glorification rejoices.'

'In all peace rituals, at the sight of evil dreams, and during the severe afflictions of planetary transits — one should hear My glorification.'

'All afflictions are calmed, terrible planetary torments are stilled, and evil dreams seen by people turn into good dreams.'
- verse 19बालग्रहाभिभूतानं बालानां शान्तिकारकम्।सङ्घातभेदे च नृणां मैत्रीकरणमुत्तमम्॥18॥bālagrahābhibhūtānaṃ bālānāṃ śāntikārakam।saṅghātabhēdē cha nṛṇāṃ maitrīkaraṇamuttamam॥18॥meaning
'It brings peace to children afflicted by childhood spirits, and is the supreme means of creating friendship among people when groups are divided.'

'It supremely weakens the strength of the altogether wicked; by the mere recitation of it, demons, ghosts, and fiends are destroyed.'

'This entire glorification of Mine creates My presence; with animals, flowers, oblations, incense, and finest fragrant lamps —'
- verse 22विप्राणां भोजनैर्होमैः प्रॊक्षणीयैरहर्निशम्।अन्यैश्च विविधैर्भोगैः प्रदानैर्वत्सरेण या॥21॥viprāṇāṃ bhōjanairhōmaiḥ prokṣaṇīyairaharniśam।anyaiścha vividhairbhōgaiḥ pradānairvatsarēṇa yā॥21॥meaning
'— with the feeding of brahmins, fire sacrifices, purificatory rites day and night, and various other offerings and gifts throughout a year —'
- verse 23प्रीतिर्मे क्रियते सास्मिन् सकृदुच्चरिते श्रुते।श्रुतं हरति पापानि तथारोग्यं प्रयच्छति॥22॥prītirmē kriyatē sāsmin sakṛduchcharitē śrutē।śrutaṃ harati pāpāni tathārōgyaṃ prayachChati॥22॥meaning
'— such gratification of Mine is achieved by one single recitation or hearing; hearing it removes sins and bestows good health.'
- verse 24रक्षां करोति भूतेभ्यो जन्मनां कीर्तिनं मम।युद्देषु चरितं यन्मे दुष्ट दैत्य निबर्हणम्॥23॥rakṣāṃ karōti bhūtēbhyō janmanāṃ kīrtinaṃ mama।yuddēṣu charitaṃ yanmē duṣṭa daitya nibarhaṇam॥23॥meaning
'It protects from evil beings all who recite My name; and the deeds I performed in battles, destroying wicked demons —'
- verse 25तस्मिञ्छृते वैरिकृतं भयं पुंसां न जायते।युष्माभिः स्तुतयो याश्च याश्च ब्रह्मर्षिभिः कृताः॥24॥tasmiñChṛtē vairikṛtaṃ bhayaṃ puṃsāṃ na jāyatē।yuṣmābhiḥ stutayō yāścha yāścha brahmarṣibhiḥ kṛtāḥ॥24॥meaning
'— hearing those, fear from enemies does not arise in a man; and those hymns of praise which you have offered and which the brahmin-sages have composed —'
- verse 26ब्रह्मणा च कृतास्तास्तु प्रयच्छन्तु शुभां मतिम्।अरण्ये प्रान्तरे वापि दावाग्नि परिवारितः॥25॥brahmaṇā cha kṛtāstāstu prayachChantu śubhāṃ matim।araṇyē prāntarē vāpi dāvāgni parivāritaḥ॥25॥meaning
'— those composed by Brahma as well — may they bestow on you an auspicious mind; whether alone in a forest or in a desolate place surrounded by a forest fire —'
- verse 27दस्युभिर्वा वृतः शून्ये गृहीतो वापि शतृभिः।सिंहव्याघ्रानुयातो वा वनेवा वन हस्तिभिः॥26॥dasyubhirvā vṛtaḥ śūnyē gṛhītō vāpi śatṛbhiḥ।siṃhavyāghrānuyātō vā vanēvā vana hastibhiḥ॥26॥meaning
'— or surrounded by robbers in a wilderness, seized by enemies, or attacked by lions, tigers, or wild forest elephants —'
- verse 28राज्ञा क्रुद्देन चाज्ञप्तो वध्यो बन्द गतोऽपिवा।आघूर्णितो वा वातेन स्थितः पोते महार्णवे॥27॥rājñā kruddēna chājñaptō vadhyō banda gatō'pivā।āghūrṇitō vā vātēna sthitaḥ pōtē mahārṇavē॥27॥meaning
'— or ordered to be executed by an angry king, whether imprisoned, or tossed about by the wind while standing on a boat in the great ocean —'
- verse 29पतत्सु चापि शस्त्रेषु सङ्ग्रामे भृशदारुणे।सर्वाबाधाशु घोरासु वेदनाभ्यर्दितोऽपिवा॥28॥patatsu chāpi śastrēṣu saṅgrāmē bhṛśadāruṇē।sarvābādhāśu ghōrāsu vēdanābhyarditō'pivā॥28॥meaning
'— or in the midst of falling weapons in an intensely terrible battle, in all terrible afflictions, or tormented by pain —'
- verse 30स्मरन् ममैतच्चरितं नरो मुच्येत सङ्कटात्।मम प्रभावात्सिंहाद्या दस्यवो वैरिण स्तथा॥29॥smaran mamaitachcharitaṃ narō muchyēta saṅkaṭāt।mama prabhāvātsiṃhādyā dasyavō vairiṇa stathā॥29॥meaning
'— the person who remembers these deeds of Mine shall be released from calamity; by My power, lions and robbers and enemies —'

'— flee afar when one remembers My deeds.'

The seer said: 31.
- verse 33इत्युक्त्वा सा भगवती चण्डिका चण्डविक्रमा।पश्यतां सर्व देवानां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत॥32॥ityuktvā sā bhagavatī chaṇḍikā chaṇḍavikramā।paśyatāṃ sarva dēvānāṃ tatraivāntaradhīyata॥32॥meaning
Having spoken thus, the Goddess Chandika of fierce valour vanished on the spot before the eyes of all the gods.
- verse 34तेऽपि देवा निरातङ्काः स्वाधिकारान्यथा पुरा।यज्ञभागभुजः सर्वे चक्रुर्वि निहतारयः॥33॥tē'pi dēvā nirātaṅkāḥ svādhikārānyathā purā।yajñabhāgabhujaḥ sarvē chakrurvi nihatārayaḥ॥33॥meaning
Those gods, now free of anxiety, performed their own respective duties as before, receiving their shares of the sacrifice with all their enemies slain.

And the demons who had been slain by the Goddess — when Shumbha, the enemy of the gods, that world-destroyer, supremely fierce and of unequalled prowess —

— and Nishumbha of great heroic strength were slain — the remaining demons went to the netherworld.

In this way, that blessed Goddess, though eternal, comes into being again and again and protects the world.

By her this universe is deluded; by her alone is the universe generated; when propitiated she grants wisdom, and when pleased she bestows prosperity.

By her — the great Goddess, Mahakali, Mahamari — the entire cosmos is pervaded, O king of men.

She herself in time is Mahamari; she herself is the unborn creatrix; she preserves living beings and in time she is the eternal one.

In the time of prosperity, O men, she is Lakshmi herself who bestows increase in homes; in adversity she is Lakshmi who causes destruction.
- verse 42स्तुता सम्पूजिता पुष्पैर्गन्धधूपादिभिस्तथा।ददाति वित्तं पुत्रांश्च मतिं धर्मे गतिं शुभां॥41॥stutā sampūjitā puṣpairgandhadhūpādibhistathā।dadāti vittaṃ putrāṃścha matiṃ dharmē gatiṃ śubhāṃ॥41॥meaning
When praised and worshipped with flowers, fragrance, incense, and other offerings, she grants wealth, sons, a mind inclined to dharma, and a good destination.
- verse 43॥ इति श्री मार्कण्डेय पुराणे सावर्निके मन्वन्तरे देवी महत्म्ये फलश्रुतिर्नाम द्वादशोऽध्याय समाप्तम् ॥॥ iti śrī mārkaṇḍēya purāṇē sāvarnikē manvantarē dēvī mahatmyē phalaśrutirnāma dvādaśō'dhyāya samāptam ॥meaning
Colophon: 'Thus ends the twelfth chapter, the Phalashruti, in the Devi Mahatmya, in the Markandeya Purana, in the Savarna Manvantara.'
