- verse 1शान्तिपाठःॐ यो ब्रह्माणं विदधाति पूर्वंयो वै वेदांश्च प्रहिणोति तस्मै ।तं ह देवमात्मबुद्धिप्रकाशंमुमुक्षुर्वै शरणमहं प्रपद्ये ॥śāntipāṭhaḥōṃ yō brahmāṇaṃ vidadhāti pūrvaṃyō vai vēdāṃścha prahiṇōti tasmai ।taṃ ha dēvamātmabuddhiprakāśaṃmumukṣurvai śaraṇamahaṃ prapadyē ॥meaning
Shanti: Om — he who creates Brahma in the beginning and imparts the Vedas to him — that self-luminous God, the light of intellect and understanding, I who seek liberation contemplate.

Dhyana: Om — the supreme Brahman-truth revealed by eloquent silence, youthful yet seated surrounded by the eldest sages firm in Brahman, the teacher-moon — I bow to that Dakshinamurti.
- verse 3वटविटपिसमीपेभूमिभागे निषण्णंसकलमुनिजनानां ज्ञानदातारमारात् ।त्रिभुवनगुरुमीशं दक्षिणामूर्तिदेवंजननमरणदुःखच्छेददक्षं नमामि ॥ 2 ॥vaṭaviṭapisamīpēbhūmibhāgē niṣaṇṇaṃsakalamunijanānāṃ jñānadātāramārāt ।tribhuvanagurumīśaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtidēvaṃjananamaraṇaduḥkhachChēdadakṣaṃ namāmi ॥ 2 ॥meaning
Seated on the ground at the foot of the banyan tree, giver of knowledge to all the gathered sages — I bow to the three-world Guru, the Lord Dakshinamurti, to drive away birth and death.

A wondrous sight at the banyan-root: the disciples are old and the guru is young; the guru's teaching is silence, and the disciples' doubts are fully severed.

Salutation to Dakshinamurti, treasure of all knowledge, healer of those sick with the disease of samsara, teacher of all the worlds.

By the semblance of the yoga mudra of thumb and forefinger, Shiva the yogi reveals to the sages the Vedic truth of the unity of Brahman and Jiva.

Om shanti shanti shanti — peace, peace, peace.

The universe, like a city seen in a mirror within oneself, appears as if outside through maya as in a dream — he who sees all this in the Self, the witness;
- verse 12बीजस्यान्तरि-वाङ्कुरो जगदितं प्राङ्निर्विकल्पं पुनःमायाकल्पित देशकालकलना वैचित्र्यचित्रीकृतम् ।मायावीव विजृम्भयत्यपि महायोगीव यः स्वेच्छयातस्मै श्रीगुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 2 ॥bījasyāntari-vāṅkurō jagaditaṃ prāṅnirvikalpaṃ punaḥmāyākalpita dēśakālakalanā vaichitryachitrīkṛtam ।māyāvīva vijṛmbhayatyapi mahāyōgīva yaḥ svēchChayātasmai śrīgurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 2 ॥meaning
This world, like a sprout within the seed, was undifferentiated before, then made into the wonderful painting of varied place and time conjured by maya — just as a magician unfolds
- verse 13यस्यैव स्फुरणं सदात्मकमसत्कल्पार्थकं भासतेसाक्षात्तत्वमसीति वेदवचसा यो बोधयत्याश्रितान् ।यस्साक्षात्करणाद्भवेन्न पुनरावृत्तिर्भवाम्भोनिधौतस्मै श्रीगुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 3 ॥yasyaiva sphuraṇaṃ sadātmakamasatkalpārthakaṃ bhāsatēsākṣāttatvamasīti vēdavachasā yō bōdhayatyāśritān ।yassākṣātkaraṇādbhavēnna punarāvṛttirbhavāmbhōnidhautasmai śrīgurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 3 ॥meaning
Whose flashing is the always-real whose purpose — falsely named — appears, and who awakens his seekers with the Vedic statement 'That art thou' face to face — whose direct realization
- verse 14नानाच्छिद्र घटोदर स्थित महादीप प्रभाभास्वरंज्ञानं यस्य तु चक्षुरादिकरण द्वारा बहिः स्पन्दते ।जानामीति तमेव भान्तमनुभात्येतत्समस्तं जगत्तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 4 ॥nānāchChidra ghaṭōdara sthita mahādīpa prabhābhāsvaraṃjñānaṃ yasya tu chakṣurādikaraṇa dvārā bahiḥ spandatē ।jānāmīti tamēva bhāntamanubhātyētatsamastaṃ jagattasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 4 ॥meaning
The knowledge that radiates through the apertures of the sense organs like the great lamp's light from inside a pot full of holes — 'I know,' thus
- verse 15देहं प्राणमपीन्द्रियाण्यपि चलां बुद्धिं च शून्यं विदुःस्त्री बालान्ध जडोपमास्त्वहमिति भ्रान्ताभृशं वादिनः ।मायाशक्ति विलासकल्पित महाव्यामोह संहारिणेतस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 5 ॥dēhaṃ prāṇamapīndriyāṇyapi chalāṃ buddhiṃ cha śūnyaṃ viduḥstrī bālāndha jaḍōpamāstvahamiti bhrāntābhṛśaṃ vādinaḥ ।māyāśakti vilāsakalpita mahāvyāmōha saṃhāriṇētasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 5 ॥meaning
Those who are confused like women, children, the blind, and the dull, who cry 'I am this body, vital breath, senses, wavering intellect, void' — by the magic of maya
- verse 16राहुग्रस्त दिवाकरेन्दु सदृशो माया समाच्छादनात्सन्मात्रः करणोप संहरणतो योऽभूत्सुषुप्तः पुमान् ।प्रागस्वाप्समिति प्रबोधसमये यः प्रत्यभिज्ञायतेतस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 6 ॥rāhugrasta divākarēndu sadṛśō māyā samāchChādanātsanmātraḥ karaṇōpa saṃharaṇatō yō'bhūtsuṣuptaḥ pumān ।prāgasvāpsamiti prabōdhasamayē yaḥ pratyabhijñāyatētasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 6 ॥meaning
Like the sun and moon swallowed by Rahu, the man of pure being who exists without thought-modifications on withdrawal of the senses falls into deep sleep, then on waking he remembers 'I slept'
- verse 17बाल्यादिष्वपि जाग्रदादिषु तथा सर्वास्ववस्थास्वपिव्यावृत्ता स्वनु वर्तमान महमित्यन्तः स्फुरन्तं सदा ।स्वात्मानं प्रकटीकरोति भजतां यो मुद्रया भद्रयातस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 7 ॥bālyādiṣvapi jāgradādiṣu tathā sarvāsvavasthāsvapivyāvṛttā svanu vartamāna mahamityantaḥ sphurantaṃ sadā ।svātmānaṃ prakaṭīkarōti bhajatāṃ yō mudrayā bhadrayātasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 7 ॥meaning
Through childhood and the rest, through waking and the rest, through all states, the ever-present 'I' that shines inwardly as distinct from and following through all changes — one who knows that own Self
- verse 18विश्वं पश्यति कार्यकारणतया स्वस्वामिसम्बन्धतःशिष्यचार्यतया तथैव पितृ पुत्राद्यात्मना भेदतः ।स्वप्ने जाग्रति वा य एष पुरुषो माया परिभ्रामितःतस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 8 ॥viśvaṃ paśyati kāryakāraṇatayā svasvāmisambandhataḥśiṣyachāryatayā tathaiva pitṛ putrādyātmanā bhēdataḥ ।svapnē jāgrati vā ya ēṣa puruṣō māyā paribhrāmitaḥtasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 8 ॥meaning
The universe is seen through cause and effect, through master and servant, through teacher and taught, through father and son and the rest as distinctions — in dream and in waking alike,
- verse 19भूरम्भांस्यनलोऽनिलोम्बर महर्नाथो हिमांशुः पुमान्इत्याभाति चराचरात्मकमिदं यस्यैव मूर्त्यष्टकम् ।नान्यत्किञ्चन विद्यते विमृशतां यस्मात्परस्माद्विभोतस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥ 9 ॥bhūrambhāṃsyanalō'nilōmbara maharnāthō himāṃśuḥ pumānityābhāti charācharātmakamidaṃ yasyaiva mūrtyaṣṭakam ।nānyatkiñchana vidyatē vimṛśatāṃ yasmātparasmādvibhōtasmai śrī gurumūrtayē nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtayē ॥ 9 ॥meaning
Earth, water, fire, wind, space, the sun, the moon, and the person — this entire moving and unmoving world is the eightfold form of this one alone — nothing else exists besides him.
- verse 20सर्वात्मत्वमिति स्फुटीकृतमिदं यस्मादमुष्मिन् स्तवेतेनास्व श्रवणात्तदर्थ मननाद्ध्यानाच्च सङ्कीर्तनात् ।सर्वात्मत्व महाविभूतिसहितं स्यादीश्वरत्वं स्वतःसिद्ध्येत्तत्पुनरष्टधा परिणतं चैश्वर्य-मव्याहतम् ॥ 10 ॥sarvātmatvamiti sphuṭīkṛtamidaṃ yasmādamuṣmin stavētēnāsva śravaṇāttadartha mananāddhyānāchcha saṅkīrtanāt ।sarvātmatva mahāvibhūtisahitaṃ syādīśvaratvaṃ svataḥsiddhyēttatpunaraṣṭadhā pariṇataṃ chaiśvarya-mavyāhatam ॥ 10 ॥meaning
Because in this hymn the all-self nature has been made manifest, from it by hearing, reflecting on its meaning, meditating, and singing it, one attains the all-self nature.
- verse 21॥ इति श्रीमच्छङ्कराचार्यविरचितं दक्षिणामूर्तिस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥॥ iti śrīmachChaṅkarāchāryavirachitaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtistōtraṃ sampūrṇam ॥meaning
