- verse 1भीष्म उवाच ।इति मतिरुपकल्पिता वितृष्णाभगवति सात्वतपुङ्गवे विभूम्नि ।स्वसुखमुपगते क्वचिद्विहर्तुंप्रकृतिमुपेयुषि यद्भवप्रवाहः ॥ 1 ॥bhīṣma uvācha ।iti matirupakalpitā vitṛṣṇābhagavati sātvatapuṅgavē vibhūmni ।svasukhamupagatē kvachidvihartuṃprakṛtimupēyuṣi yadbhavapravāhaḥ ॥ 1 ॥meaning
Thus Bhishma spoke: This wisdom fashioned without craving rests upon the Lord, the foremost of the Satvatas and all-pervading, who—having attained his own bliss—sometimes enters nature to sport, yet the torrent of becoming follows him.

O Krishna, victory-companion, may my devotion be flawless toward you whose form is desired by the three worlds, dark as tamala trees, wearing garments bright as the sun's rays, your lotus-face adorned with curling locks.

In battle, with dust from galloping horses darkening the sky and sweat adorning your face, may Krishna's soul dwell in your body, which is pierced by my sharp arrows and gleams in radiant armor.

Hearing at once the words of his friend in the midst, placing the chariot between the forces of both sides, standing with eyes fixed on the enemy army, may my affection rest in Krishna, the companion of Partha, who bore away that moment.
- verse 5व्यवहित पृथनामुखं निरीक्ष्यस्वजनवधाद्विमुखस्य दोषबुद्ध्या ।कुमतिमहरदात्मविद्यया य--श्चरणरतिः परमस्य तस्य मेऽस्तु ॥ 5 ॥vyavahita pṛthanāmukhaṃ nirīkṣyasvajanavadhādvimukhasya dōṣabuddhyā ।kumatimaharadātmavidyayā ya--ścharaṇaratiḥ paramasya tasya mē'stu ॥ 5 ॥meaning
Observing Krishna arrayed with countless faces, Bhishma—turning from slaying his kinsmen through understanding of fault—possessed devotion to the feet of that Supreme One, whose knowledge destroys the ocean of delusion; may such attachment to Him be mine.

Abandoning His own scripture to uphold my pledge, Krishna stood in the chariot unwavering in dharma, grasped the chariot's wheel with steady hand, and like Hari pursuing the elephant, advanced with his upper garment removed.

Pierced by cold arrows with shattered fangs, drenched in blood, my aggressor rushed violently toward my slaying—may that Lord Mukunda be my refuge and goal.

May my devotion to the Lord—who bears the victorious chariot-array with drawn bowstrings, who holds the horse-reins, whose glory is beheld by the eye—remain steadfast even as I, the dying one, witness here those slain and departed to their final form.

The cowherd women, enchanted and blinded by Krishna's graceful gait, playful charm, sweet laughter, and loving glances that seemed to fashion their very hearts, thus forgot their own nature.

In the assembly crowded with distinguished sages and kings at Yudhishthira's royal sacrifice, this Krishna—worthy of worship and visible to my sight—reveals himself before my eyes.

That unborn Krishna, dwelling in the heart of each embodied being as the Self they themselves imagine, I have comprehended as one sun reflected distinctly in each water—singular yet appearing manifold—my delusion of multiplicity now dispelled.
